PM Modi to Attend Sikkim Statehood Finale, Launch ₹4,000 Crore Projects
Major push across healthcare, education, connectivity and tourism as Sikkim marks 50 years of statehood in Gangtok

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sikkim on April 27–28, 2026, to participate in the closing ceremony of the state’s 50th year of statehood celebrations in Gangtok. During the visit, he will inaugurate, launch and lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over ₹4,000 crore, spanning sectors such as infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare, education, power, tourism, and urban development.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive in Gangtok on April 27 at around 3 PM. On April 28, he will begin his engagements with a visit to the Orchidarium in Gangtok, where the newly developed Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park—an advanced Orchid Experience Centre—will showcase the rich ecological and floral heritage of the Himalayan state.
Later in the morning, at around 10 AM, the Prime Minister will attend the grand closing ceremony of Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee statehood celebrations at Paljor Stadium. Addressing a large gathering, he will unveil a wide array of projects aimed at accelerating holistic and inclusive development across the state.
In the healthcare sector, a major highlight will be the foundation stone laying of a 100-bedded Ayurveda hospital at Yangang in Namchi district. Additionally, a 30-bedded Integrated Sowa Rigpa Hospital at NIT Deorali will be inaugurated, strengthening access to traditional and integrative healthcare systems in Sikkim.
Education infrastructure will receive a significant boost with the inauguration of the permanent campus of Sikkim University at Yangang, along with key institutional developments including the Administrative Block of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University of Excellence at Chakung, the Helen Lepcha Medical College at Socheygang, and the Dentam Professional College in Gyalshing district. Model residential schools at Hee Gyathang, a new Model Degree College at Mangshila, and a monastic hostel-cum-classroom at Boomtar Gumpa will also be inaugurated. The Prime Minister will further launch IT-enabled infrastructure projects across 160 schools, aimed at modernising education delivery in the state.
Connectivity projects will also form a key part of the announcements. The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for two double-lane steel arch bridges over the Teesta River at Sirwani and Lower Samdong, improving connectivity between Namchi and Gangtok districts. He will also inaugurate the upgraded road from Birdhang to Namchi via Kitchudumra, expected to enhance inter-district mobility and ease the movement of goods and passengers.
In the power sector, projects focusing on the improvement and revamping of the transmission and distribution network in Gangtok will be inaugurated, ensuring more reliable electricity supply for residents and businesses.
Urban development initiatives include the inauguration of the Jan Seva Sachivalaya (Mini Secretariat) at Lumsey and the Civil Service Officers Institute in Gangtok. Housing projects under the Sikkim Urban Garib Awas Yojana at Lingding, along with residential facilities for police personnel and Grade ‘C’ quarters at SAP Pangthang, will also be launched. The foundation stone for Sadhbhav Mandap, a public utility centre at MG Marg, will also be laid.
Environmental conservation efforts will be strengthened through projects such as the sewerage system rehabilitation in Singtam town under river pollution abatement initiatives. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate a pollution control project for the Rani Chu river system in Gangtok, aimed at improving urban sanitation and preserving fragile ecosystems.
Tourism and pilgrimage infrastructure will see major upgrades with the redevelopment of the Ridge Precinct in Gangtok, eco-tourism projects in Soreng district, and facilities linked to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route, including developments at 18th Mile and Hangu Lake. A Yatri Niwas at Krishna Pranami Mangaldham in Namphing will also be inaugurated, while the foundation stone for an Eco-Pilgrimage Complex at Silnon will be laid.
In the agriculture and allied sectors, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the Sikkim IFFCO Processing Plant, expected to boost agro-processing capacity and improve farmer incomes by strengthening value chains. Additionally, indoor cricket facilities at Mining in Rangpo, Pakyong district, will be inaugurated to promote sports and youth engagement.
The visit marks a significant milestone in Sikkim’s journey since attaining statehood in 1975. The Golden Jubilee celebrations underscore the state’s development achievements and cultural identity, while the new projects reflect a continued push for sustainable growth in the Northeast region.
Officials said the Prime Minister’s visit reaffirms the government’s commitment to the rapid and inclusive development of Sikkim, with a focus on infrastructure expansion, environmental sustainability, and improved quality of life for its people.
