IRCTC Records Historic Single-Day Booking of More Than 20 Lakh Tickets

The Indian Railway online ticketing system has achieved a major milestone, with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) recording its highest-ever single-day booking of more than 20 lakh reserved tickets on September 7, 2026.

IRCTC recorded 20,06,353 ticket bookings on September 7, driven largely by increased demand during the festive season and Advance Reservation Period (ARP) bookings. The achievement highlights the enhanced capacity and resilience of the Next Generation e-Ticketing (NGeT) system amid exceptionally high passenger demand.

The system continued to handle heavy booking volumes the following day, recording 19,50,699 tickets on September 8. The latest figures represent a significant increase over the previous peak recorded during the corresponding festive booking period, when 18,40,203 tickets were booked in a single day.

Around 89% of reserved railway tickets are currently booked online, making the reliability and scalability of the IRCTC digital ticketing platform increasingly important for passengers across the country.

Booking System Handles Heavy Peak-Hour Demand

According to the latest booking pattern, only about 8.43% to 14.14% of the day’s total bookings are completed during the first hour of the Advance Reservation Period, between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM.

More than 85% of bookings are completed later in the day. However, the first 15 minutes between 8:00 AM and 8:15 AM continue to experience the highest volume of concurrent booking activity, reflecting intense demand when the reservation window opens.

IRCTC said the record booking performance has been supported by a series of hardware, software, user-interface and cybersecurity upgrades.

NGeT Refresh Doubles System Capacity

One of the key measures has been the NGeT Refresh, under which the server capacity of the ticketing ecosystem has been substantially enhanced.

New-generation servers have been introduced to replace older infrastructure, resulting in an overall capacity enhancement of approximately two times compared with the earlier infrastructure.

The capacity improvement has not been limited to hardware. Software optimisation and architectural improvements have also contributed to a substantial increase in the system’s ability to handle large numbers of simultaneous users and transactions.

New IRCTC User Interface

Another major upgrade has been the introduction of the new IRCTC User Interface beta version from July 15, 2026.

The redesigned interface provides a more contemporary booking experience and presents information in a more structured format. One of the important features is the consolidation of seat availability across multiple classes on a single screen.

Passengers can compare options such as Sleeper, AC 3-Tier and AC 2-Tier without repeatedly navigating between different pages. The objective is to reduce the time and number of steps required to complete a booking, particularly during periods of high demand.

Anti-Bot Measures Reduce Malicious Traffic

IRCTC has also strengthened its technology infrastructure through the implementation of Anti-BOT and Content Delivery Network (CDN) capabilities.

According to the information released by IRCTC, Anti-BOT measures have helped mitigate malicious bot traffic by approximately 55% to 65% in recent months.

The CDN deployment for static content has also reduced the load on the NGeT platform, allowing system resources to focus more effectively on genuine and verified users.

The IRCTC Network Security Team is simultaneously taking action against fake websites and mobile applications that impersonate the official ticketing platform.

Restrictions During Opening ARP Window

Several measures have also been introduced to make the opening reservation window more equitable.

Authorised ticketing agents, including YTSKs, RTSAs and IRCTC agents, are prohibited from booking ARP tickets during the first 10 minutes of the reservation window, from 8:00 AM to 8:10 AM.

In addition, only Aadhaar-authenticated users are permitted to book tickets during the opening ARP window, a measure that came into effect on October 12, 2025.

IRCTC said the NGeT platform has successfully handled between 1.33 crore and 1.74 crore logins and processed approximately 17 lakh to 20 lakh bookings on individual ARP opening days.

Action Against Misuse and Suspicious Accounts

IRCTC has also continued its action against suspected misuse of the online ticketing system.

The measures include the deactivation of approximately 3.04 crore user IDs, while another 6.33 crore IDs have been placed under revalidation.

The corporation has also blocked 16,041 suspicious email domains and lodged 592 complaints on the Cyber Crime Portal, covering approximately 4.21 lakh suspicious PNRs.

These measures are aimed at preventing fraudulent activities, misuse of the booking system and attempts to manipulate the availability of tickets.

No NGeT Outage Despite Record Demand

The latest booking figures are significant not only because of the number of tickets booked but also because the NGeT platform continued operating despite exceptionally high concurrent demand.

IRCTC said there was no failure or outage of the NGeT platform during the period under consideration. The system remained operational while processing millions of requests and a record volume of ticket transactions.

The sustained performance is particularly important during the festive season, when demand for reserved railway accommodation traditionally rises sharply.

Key IRCTC Booking Milestones

Indicator Figure
Record bookings on September 7, 2026 20,06,353 tickets
Bookings on September 8, 2026 19,50,699 tickets
Earlier festive-season peak 18,40,203 tickets
Reserved tickets booked online Around 89%
NGeT capacity enhancement Approximately 2 times
Reduction in malicious BOT traffic 55%–65%
Logins on ARP opening days 1.33–1.74 crore
Bookings on ARP opening days 17–20 lakh
User IDs deactivated 3.04 crore
IDs under revalidation 6.33 crore
Suspicious email domains blocked 16,041
Cyber Crime Portal complaints 592
Suspicious PNRs covered 4.21 lakh

The record of more than 20 lakh bookings in a single day marks an important milestone in the continuing digital transformation of Indian Railways’ passenger reservation system. With nearly nine out of every ten reserved tickets being booked online, the ability of IRCTC’s NGeT platform to manage peak demand has become critical to the passenger experience.

IRCTC has said it remains committed to continuously upgrading the online railway ticketing ecosystem through infrastructure expansion, software optimisation, improved user interfaces, cybersecurity measures and action against fraudulent or automated misuse.

The September 7 milestone demonstrates the growing scale of India’s digital railway reservation network and the increasing capacity of the system to manage exceptionally high passenger demand during the festive travel season.
