India Achieves Major Defence Milestone with Successful Trial of Indigenous TARA Weapon

In a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully carried out the maiden flight-trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon system off the coast of Odisha on May 7, 2026.

TARA is a modular range extension kit and India’s first indigenous glide weapon system designed to convert conventional unguided warheads into highly accurate precision-guided weapons. The successful trial marks a major step forward in strengthening the country’s self-reliance in advanced military technologies.

The weapon system has been designed and developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories. According to officials, the system is aimed at improving the lethality, range, and accuracy of low-cost weapons used to neutralise ground-based targets.

DRDO stated that TARA is the first glide weapon in India to employ state-of-the-art low-cost systems, making it a cost-effective yet highly capable solution for modern warfare requirements. The development programme has also involved Development cum Production Partners (DcPP) and several Indian industries, which have already initiated production activities for the weapon system.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Air Force, industry partners, and all teams associated with the successful maiden trial. He described the achievement as an important milestone in advancing India’s indigenous defence manufacturing and strategic capabilities.

Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Samir V Kamat also praised the scientists, engineers, and teams involved in the project for the successful demonstration of the weapon system.

The successful test of TARA is expected to further strengthen India’s growing portfolio of indigenous smart weapon systems and enhance the operational capability of the armed forces.
