Ambedkar Jayanti 2026: Battle for Dalit Votes Intensifies in UP Ahead of 2027 Polls

Dalit Outreach Takes Centre Stage in Uttar Pradesh Politics

April 14 marks Ambedkar Jayanti, but this year the occasion carries heightened political significance in Uttar Pradesh. With the 2027 Assembly elections on the horizon, the race to win over Dalit voters has intensified. Accounting for nearly 21% of the state’s electorate, Dalit voters have the potential to decisively shape electoral outcomes.

BJP’s Big Push: Welfare and Symbolism
The ruling BJP has announced the launch of the ‘Ambedkar Murti Vikas Yojana’ on the occasion. Under this scheme, ₹1 crore will be allocated to each Assembly constituency for the construction of canopies and related structures over statues of Baba Saheb Ambedkar.

The government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has earmarked a total outlay of ₹403 crore for the initiative. Alongside this, the BJP plans a focused outreach campaign in Dalit localities and hostels, aiming to engage directly with the community through awareness programmes.

This strategy is particularly crucial for the BJP after facing a strong challenge in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where the Samajwadi Party (SP) leveraged the PDA (Backward, Dalit, Minority) alliance to gain ground.

SP’s Outreach: Constitution-Centric Engagement
The Samajwadi Party is also stepping up efforts to connect with Dalit voters. For the first time, the party is organising a statewide campaign on Ambedkar Jayanti, focusing on spreading awareness about constitutional rights within Dalit communities.

This move signals the SP’s intent to deepen its outreach and counter the BJP’s expanding footprint among Dalit voters.

RSS and Grassroots Engagement
Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) continues its long-standing practice of organising ‘Sahbhoj’ (community meals) in Dalit localities. These grassroots initiatives have played a role in fostering social outreach and building connections at the ground level.

BSP’s Decline Reshapes the Equation
The declining influence of the Bahujan Samaj Party and its leader Mayawati has significantly altered the political landscape.

Once the primary representative of Dalit politics in the state, the BSP’s weakening grip has led to a more fluid Dalit vote base—one that both the BJP and the SP are now aggressively targeting.

The Big Question
The key question remains: Will the BJP succeed in attracting Dalit voters through its schemes and outreach, or will the SP’s renewed focus on constitutional awareness resonate more strongly?

While 2027 is still some distance away, Ambedkar Jayanti 2026 has already set the tone—Dalit voters are poised to be the decisive factor in Uttar Pradesh’s political battleground.
