CBI Files Second Supplementary Chargesheet Against Reliance ADA Group Executive

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a second supplementary chargesheet in the Reliance Communications Limited (RCom) case against Amitabh Jhunjhunwala, Group Managing Director of the Reliance ADA Group. The chargesheet was filed on August 21, 2026, before the Special Judge for CBI Cases in Mumbai.

Jhunjhunwala has been charged with offences including criminal conspiracy, criminal misappropriation and cheating in connection with an alleged fraud involving State Bank of India (SBI). According to the CBI investigation, Jhunjhunwala, who held a key position within the group, allegedly acted as part of a criminal conspiracy to dishonestly and fraudulently obtain a term loan of Rs. 1,200 crore for Reliance Communications Limited and Reliance Infratel Limited.

The CBI has alleged that the loans were not repaid, resulting in a wrongful loss of approximately Rs. 971.25 crore to SBI. The agency’s investigation has focused on the manner in which the loan facilities were obtained and the alleged role played by senior executives and other individuals associated with the companies.

The latest filing is the second supplementary chargesheet in the case and takes the total number of accused charge-sheeted by the CBI to 20.

The agency had initially registered the case on the basis of a complaint submitted by State Bank of India. According to the FIR, the overall exposure of Indian public sector banks and financial institutions in the case stands at approximately Rs. 19,694.33 crore.

The CBI had filed its first chargesheet on May 29, 2026, naming 16 accused persons. These included Reliance Communications Limited, five senior executives of the company and 10 bank officials.

The agency subsequently filed a supplementary chargesheet against three additional accused persons—Netizen Engineering P Limited and its directors Anil Jamna Kalya and Tunu Sahu. With the latest chargesheet against Jhunjhunwala, the number of individuals and entities formally charge-sheeted in the case has risen to 20.

The CBI said its investigation into the case is continuing, including examination of the roles of other accused persons and other aspects of the alleged financial irregularities. The agency has indicated that further action may follow as the investigation progresses.

The Reliance Communications case forms part of a wider set of investigations involving companies associated with the Reliance ADA Group. The CBI has registered eight FIRs concerning Reliance Communications Limited (RCom), Reliance Home Finance Limited (RHFL), Reliance Commercial Finance Limited (RCFL) and Reliance Telecom Limited (RTL).

These FIRs were registered on complaints received from various public sector banks, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The cases relate to allegations concerning financial transactions and the alleged diversion or misuse of funds involving the companies.

The CBI has so far arrested seven accused persons in cases relating to the Reliance ADA Group. According to the agency, all seven are currently in judicial custody.

The investigations into these cases are being monitored by the Supreme Court. The CBI has said it remains committed to carrying out an expeditious and comprehensive investigation into the alleged financial irregularities.

The latest chargesheet does not mark the end of the investigation. The agency has made it clear that its probe into the RCom case and related matters will continue, including investigation into other accused persons and aspects that may emerge during the course of the proceedings.

The filing of a chargesheet represents the CBI’s allegations based on its investigation; the charges remain subject to judicial scrutiny and determination by the competent court.
