Indian Railways to Begin Transition to Upgraded Reservation System from August

In a major step toward modernising passenger services, Indian Railways will begin shifting trains to its newly upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS) from August this year. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday directed railway officials to ensure that the transition from the nearly 40-year-old reservation system takes place smoothly without causing inconvenience to passengers.

The review meeting was held at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi and was attended by Union Ministers of State for Railways V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu along with senior railway officials. During the meeting, the Railway Minister stressed the importance of maintaining uninterrupted passenger services while implementing the upgraded digital infrastructure.

The existing Passenger Reservation System was introduced in 1986 and has served Indian Railways for almost four decades. Over the years, the system underwent several incremental upgrades and modifications, but the core architecture remained largely unchanged. With rising passenger demand and increasing digital adoption across the country, Indian Railways has now undertaken a complete overhaul of the system using advanced and modern technologies.

Officials said the upgraded reservation system has significantly enhanced processing capacity, improved response time, and strengthened system reliability. The transition marks one of the biggest technological upgrades in the history of Indian Railways’ passenger operations.

Indian Railways has witnessed a remarkable transformation in ticket booking methods over the past two decades. A major milestone came in 2002 when the Railways introduced internet-based ticket booking facilities. Since then, digital ticketing has rapidly expanded across the country, fundamentally changing the way passengers access railway services.

Today, online platforms account for nearly 88 percent of the total railway ticketing demand in India. As a result, dependence on physical ticket counters has reduced substantially, especially in urban and semi-urban areas. Railway officials noted that the growing popularity of smartphones and digital payment systems has further accelerated the shift toward online railway services.

Among the latest digital initiatives, the RailOne mobile application has emerged as one of the fastest-growing railway service platforms in the country. The app was launched in July last year and has already crossed more than 3.5 crore downloads within less than a year of its launch.

Officials said the app’s popularity is driven by its integrated approach, which combines multiple railway services into a single platform. Apart from ticket booking, the application provides passengers with comprehensive railway-related information and customer support services.

One of the most appreciated features of the RailOne app is its AI-based waitlist confirmation prediction system. When passengers book tickets, the app estimates the likelihood of confirmation for waitlisted tickets. Earlier this year, Indian Railways introduced an upgraded Artificial Intelligence-based prediction engine that significantly improved the accuracy of these forecasts.

According to railway officials, the accuracy level of waitlist confirmation predictions has increased from around 53 percent earlier to nearly 94 percent now. Passengers have widely appreciated this feature as it helps them make informed travel decisions and reduces uncertainty regarding ticket confirmations.

The RailOne app also offers a wide range of passenger-centric services, including booking, cancellation, and refund facilities for reserved tickets, unreserved tickets, and platform tickets. In addition, passengers can access real-time train schedules, live train running status, platform information, coach position details, and Rail Madad assistance services through the app.

The app has also simplified onboard services for passengers. Travelers can order meals during their journey and receive food directly at their seats through integrated catering services available on the platform. Railway officials stated that these convenience-oriented features are helping Indian Railways improve passenger experience and promote digital adoption on a large scale.

Every day, approximately 9.29 lakh tickets are booked through the RailOne app across the country. This includes around 7.2 lakh unreserved tickets and nearly 2.09 lakh reserved tickets. The figures also include platform ticket bookings, which have increasingly shifted to digital platforms.

The app has gained popularity across both Android and iOS platforms. Data shared during the review meeting showed that the application has been downloaded more than 3.16 crore times from the Google Play Store, while Apple device downloads have crossed 33.17 lakh.

During the meeting, officials also highlighted Indian Railways’ continued efforts to make travel affordable for passengers. In the financial year 2024–25, Indian Railways provided a subsidy of ₹60,239 crore on passenger ticket fares. This translates to an average subsidy of approximately 43 percent per passenger.

Officials explained that while the actual cost of providing railway services may be around ₹100, passengers on average pay only about ₹57 as ticket fare. The subsidy reflects the Railways’ commitment to providing affordable transportation to millions of people across the country.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw directed officials to carefully monitor the migration process to the upgraded reservation system and ensure that passengers experience a seamless transition. He emphasised that technological modernisation must go hand in hand with reliability, efficiency, and passenger convenience.

With the upcoming rollout of the upgraded Passenger Reservation System, Indian Railways is expected to further strengthen its digital infrastructure and improve the overall travel experience for millions of passengers nationwide.
