India Steps Up Energy, Maritime and Citizen Support Measures Amid West Asia Tensions

The Government of India has rolled out a comprehensive set of measures across energy supply, maritime operations and citizen support systems to ensure stability and preparedness in the wake of escalating developments in West Asia, particularly concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Authorities have emphasized that despite global uncertainties, there is no immediate shortage of essential fuels, and systems are being actively managed to maintain uninterrupted supply across the country.

Energy Supply Remains Stable, Government Urges Calm

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has reassured citizens that petrol, diesel and LPG supplies remain adequate. The government has urged people to avoid panic buying and unnecessary LPG bookings, warning that rumors and misinformation could disrupt supply chains.

Citizens have also been advised to use digital platforms for LPG bookings and explore alternative cooking options such as PNG, induction and electric appliances wherever possible. Energy conservation has been highlighted as a key public responsibility during this period.

To manage demand, the government has extended LPG cylinder booking intervals—now 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural regions. Additionally, alternative fuels like kerosene and coal are being supplied to reduce pressure on LPG demand.

Key LPG Supply and Distribution Trends

The government has taken several steps to ensure smooth LPG distribution while cracking down on illegal practices such as hoarding and black marketing.

LPG Supply Snapshot

Category Key Data
Domestic LPG cylinders delivered (daily) 51 lakh
Online bookings share 95%
DAC-based delivery authentication Increased to 89%
5 kg FTL cylinders sold (since March 23) 5.7 lakh
5 kg FTL cylinders sold (yesterday) 71,000+

Notably, 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders are now widely available at distributors and can be purchased using a valid ID without address proof, making them especially accessible to migrant workers and transient populations.

Enforcement Drive Intensifies

To curb malpractice, enforcement agencies conducted over 3,700 raids in a single day across states and union territories. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have issued around 1,000 show-cause notices and suspended 27 LPG distributorships so far.

States have been directed to intensify monitoring, conduct daily press briefings and set up control rooms to counter misinformation.

PNG Expansion Gains Momentum

The government is accelerating the transition toward cleaner fuels, particularly Piped Natural Gas (PNG), to reduce dependency on LPG.

PNG Expansion Progress

Indicator Figures
New PNG connections since March 2026 3.5 lakh+
Registrations for new connections 3.8 lakh+
Supply to domestic PNG users 100%
Supply to industries 80%

Special incentives are being offered by gas companies such as IGL, MGL, GAIL Gas and BPCL to encourage adoption. Fast-track approvals and policy reforms have also been introduced to expand gas infrastructure nationwide.

Additionally, fertilizer plants will receive increased gas supply—from 70–75% to nearly 90% of their six-month average consumption starting April 6—ensuring agricultural stability.

Commercial LPG and Industrial Supply Adjustments

The government has capped commercial LPG allocation at 70% of pre-crisis levels while prioritizing essential sectors. Critical industries such as pharmaceuticals, food supply and petrochemicals are receiving assured allocations.

A total of 72,047 metric tonnes of commercial LPG has been supplied since mid-March, indicating steady industrial support despite global disruptions.

Fuel Pricing and Retail Availability

Retail fuel outlets across India continue to operate normally. To shield consumers from rising global crude prices, the government has reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre.

Additionally, export levies have been imposed:

  • Diesel: ₹21.5 per litre
  • Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF): ₹29.5 per litre

These measures aim to ensure sufficient domestic availability.

Despite isolated incidents of panic buying, authorities confirmed that petrol pumps nationwide have adequate stock.

Kerosene Allocation Increased

To support vulnerable populations, an additional 48,000 kilolitres of kerosene has been allocated to states and union territories. Distribution systems have been expanded even in regions that previously did not rely on kerosene.

Maritime Operations Remain Uninterrupted

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has ensured that maritime trade and safety remain unaffected.

A major development includes the safe passage of LPG vessel Green Sanvi, which transported 46,650 metric tonnes of LPG through the Strait of Hormuz.

Maritime Status Overview

Indicator Details
Indian-flagged vessels in Gulf region 17
Indian seafarers onboard 460
Seafarers repatriated so far 1,320+
Calls handled by DG Shipping control room 5,015
Emails handled 10,425

All Indian seafarers in the region are reported safe, and no incidents involving Indian vessels have been recorded in the past 24 hours.

Support for Indian Nationals Abroad

The Ministry of External Affairs has activated extensive support systems for Indian citizens across West Asia.

Indian missions are operating 24×7 helplines, issuing advisories and assisting with travel logistics amid airspace restrictions.

Efforts include:

  • Facilitating evacuation routes via third countries such as Armenia, Jordan and Saudi Arabia
  • Supporting stranded fishermen and workers
  • Coordinating with airlines and local authorities

Since February 28, approximately 6.75 lakh passengers have traveled from the region to India.

In one recent incident in Abu Dhabi, five Indian nationals were injured; four have been discharged, while one remains under treatment with full support from Indian authorities.

Government Strengthens Coordination with States

The Centre has directed states to:

  • Conduct daily press briefings
  • Counter fake news actively
  • Intensify enforcement drives
  • Promote PNG adoption
  • Ensure priority LPG distribution for households and essential services

Currently, 21 states and union territories are already conducting regular press briefings.

Conclusion

Despite global uncertainties triggered by developments in West Asia, India has demonstrated a high level of preparedness across critical sectors. From ensuring fuel security and stabilizing prices to safeguarding maritime operations and supporting citizens abroad, coordinated efforts between central ministries, states and industry stakeholders are helping maintain stability.

The government continues to monitor the situation closely while urging citizens to remain calm, avoid panic-driven actions and rely only on official information channels.
