Centre, Chhattisgarh Review Key Railway Projects; Bastar Connectivity, New Rail Links Get Major Push
The Centre has stepped up efforts to strengthen railway infrastructure in Chhattisgarh, with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw holding a high-level meeting with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu to review a series of strategic rail connectivity projects across the state.
The meeting focused on accelerating railway expansion in Chhattisgarh, improving connectivity to remote and tribal regions, and supporting economic growth through enhanced transportation infrastructure. Several key railway projects, including new rail corridors and long-pending connectivity proposals, were discussed with an emphasis on expediting implementation.
A major highlight of the discussions was the Rowghat–Kondagaon–Jagdalpur rail connectivity project, which is expected to transform transportation in the Bastar region. Officials said preparations for the project are already in place and work will now be accelerated. Once completed, the railway line is expected to significantly improve connectivity across Bastar, one of Chhattisgarh’s most strategically important and mineral-rich regions.
The proposed railway corridor is expected to provide better access for passengers while also facilitating the movement of minerals, industrial goods and agricultural produce. Improved rail connectivity is also expected to boost tourism and create new economic opportunities in the tribal belt by linking previously underserved areas with the broader railway network.
The meeting also reviewed the proposed Gadchiroli–Dantewada rail link, a project that aims to improve connectivity between Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. The participants emphasized taking the proposal forward, recognising its strategic importance for regional development and inter-state connectivity. The rail link is expected to strengthen transport infrastructure in the region while supporting economic activities and improving accessibility.
Another important project discussed during the meeting was the Dongargarh–Katghora railway line. The project will be implemented through a Joint Venture (JV) company. Under the proposed funding arrangement, the Central Government will extend its equity contribution while the Chhattisgarh Government will provide its required share in the joint venture. The model is expected to facilitate faster implementation while ensuring financial participation from both the Centre and the State.
Officials believe the Dongargarh–Katghora railway line will improve rail connectivity within Chhattisgarh, provide better access to industrial and mining areas, and strengthen freight transportation. The project is also expected to improve passenger mobility by connecting important districts and reducing travel time across the state.
The discussions reflected the Centre’s broader strategy of expanding railway infrastructure in states with significant industrial, mining and agricultural potential. Chhattisgarh plays a vital role in India’s mineral economy, and improved railway connectivity is expected to support the transportation of coal, iron ore, steel and other commodities while enhancing logistics efficiency.
During the meeting, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to the development of Chhattisgarh and highlighted the vision of building a “Swarnim Chhattisgarh” through modern infrastructure, improved connectivity and accelerated economic growth.
The review meeting also underscored the importance of close coordination between the Central and State governments in implementing large infrastructure projects. Railway officials and state representatives discussed ways to resolve project-related issues and ensure timely progress on key railway initiatives.
With the Centre placing renewed emphasis on expanding railway infrastructure, the projects reviewed during the meeting are expected to improve connectivity in remote regions, strengthen freight and passenger transportation, generate employment during construction, and contribute to the long-term socio-economic development of Chhattisgarh.
The accelerated implementation of these railway projects is also expected to integrate the Bastar region more closely with the national railway network, providing new opportunities for trade, industry, tourism and regional development while reinforcing the government’s commitment to modernising railway infrastructure across the country.
