Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Seeks Central Support for Urban Development, Ganga Corridor Upgrades Ahead of Kumbh 2027

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met Union Minister for Power, Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi today to discuss key proposals aimed at urban infrastructure development in Haridwar, in view of the upcoming Kumbh Mela in January 2027.

During the high-level meeting, Chief Minister Dhami requested central approval for the phased implementation of underground cabling and automation systems in the Ganga Corridor area. He sought Rs 325 crore in the first phase and approximately Rs 425 crore in the second phase to ensure modernized and efficient electrical infrastructure capable of supporting the massive influx of devotees during the Kumbh festivities.

“These projects are crucial to enhance urban infrastructure, ensure uninterrupted power supply, and improve the safety and convenience of pilgrims visiting the holy city,” said a senior official accompanying the Chief Minister. The underground cabling initiative is expected to reduce transmission losses, minimize power outages, and support smart-city features in the Ganga Corridor.

Apart from energy infrastructure, Chief Minister Dhami also sought central support for the beautification of ghats in Haridwar. This includes renovation and aesthetic improvement of riverside areas, better lighting, and landscaping to provide a more comfortable and visually appealing experience for visitors. The CM emphasized that modern residential facilities for pilgrims and tourists should be strengthened, along with upgrades to sanitation and urban amenities.

“Urban infrastructure development in Haridwar is critical not just for the Kumbh Mela but also to support the city’s long-term growth as a spiritual and tourist hub,” the CM noted during the meeting.

Transportation connectivity was another key area of discussion. Chief Minister Dhami proposed the extension of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) from Modi Puram in Meerut to Haridwar. This extension aims to provide fast, efficient, and seamless travel for pilgrims and residents traveling between Delhi-NCR and Uttarakhand’s religious destinations.

Additionally, the CM urged the central government to support the development of the Dehradun–Haridwar–Rishikesh metro corridor, which would integrate major urban centers in the state and improve intra-state connectivity. The proposed metro corridor is expected to decongest road traffic, reduce travel times, and provide a modern public transport option for daily commuters and tourists alike.

The meeting highlighted Uttarakhand’s proactive approach to preparing for the next Kumbh Mela, which is anticipated to draw millions of devotees from across the country and the globe. Authorities emphasized that these infrastructure projects, including power system modernization, beautification of ghats, and transport improvements, would not only support religious tourism but also enhance the quality of urban life for local residents.

Chief Minister Dhami expressed optimism about receiving the central government’s support for these initiatives. “Haridwar is at the heart of Uttarakhand’s spiritual and cultural identity. With central backing, we aim to make the city ready for Kumbh 2027 and ensure a sustainable and modern urban environment for residents and visitors,” he said.

The discussions between the Uttarakhand government and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs underscore a collaborative effort between state and central authorities to strengthen urban planning, infrastructure resilience, and transport systems in preparation for one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

If approved, the proposed funding and projects are expected to transform Haridwar’s urban landscape, improve citizen services, and set new benchmarks for smart city development in India’s pilgrimage cities.
