Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit Nears Completion To Build 200 Intercity Trains
Ashwini Vaishnaw says modern energy-efficient trains with advanced safety features will transform affordable short-distance rail connectivity across India.

The Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit in Telangana is nearing completion and is set to become a major hub for modern railway coach production in India. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the facility will begin manufacturing advanced intercity trains aimed at improving short-distance travel across the country.
The Railway Minister, along with Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, reviewed the plans for operationalising the unit with senior railway officials. According to the ministry, the Kazipet facility will initially manufacture 200 intercity trains over the next five years.
The new trains are being designed specifically for short-distance and regional travel, covering routes of nearly 300 kilometres with multiple stoppages between towns and cities. Railway officials said the trains are intended to provide affordable and convenient travel options for daily commuters, students, office workers and people travelling for healthcare and business purposes.
The upcoming intercity services are expected to function like shuttle trains connecting nearby urban and semi-urban centres across India. Officials believe the introduction of these trains will help shift a significant portion of passenger traffic from roads to railways, reducing congestion and promoting cleaner transportation.
The trains manufactured at the Kazipet unit will feature several modern passenger-friendly technologies. Each train will have a 20-coach configuration equipped with automatic door-closing systems, improved ventilation and enhanced safety features. Every coach will include two toilets, one at each end, to improve passenger convenience during frequent-stop operations.
Railway authorities said the trains will also use advanced bogies and modern jerk-free couplers designed to provide smoother journeys. The intercity trains are expected to operate at speeds of up to 130 kilometres per hour, enabling faster and more efficient travel between nearby cities and towns.
A major highlight of the new train design is the use of regenerative braking technology. Under this system, electricity generated during braking will be fed back into the power grid, improving overall energy efficiency and reducing operational energy consumption. Officials said the trains are being developed as an environmentally friendly transport solution with significantly lower carbon emissions compared to road-based transport systems.
The Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit is being developed as a versatile rolling stock production facility capable of supporting future railway expansion plans. Railway officials believe the project will not only strengthen India’s rail manufacturing ecosystem but also generate employment and industrial growth in the region.
The Centre sees the project as part of a broader push to modernise Indian Railways and increase the use of green transportation systems. With the addition of a large fleet of energy-efficient intercity trains, the railway network is expected to provide improved regional connectivity while reducing pressure on highways and road transport.
Officials said the operationalisation of the Kazipet facility marks another major milestone in the government’s efforts to expand indigenous railway manufacturing under the “Make in India” initiative. Once production begins, the trains manufactured in Telangana are expected to serve passengers across multiple states, creating a nationwide network of modern short-distance rail services.
The railway ministry added that the new intercity trains will play a key role in supporting economic activity, improving mobility and offering safer and more sustainable transportation options for millions of passengers in the coming years.
