Advance Registration for 2026 Amarnath Yatra Begins on April 15
Shri Amarnath Shrine Board to open registration at 554 bank branches across India on first-come, first-served basis

Advance registration for the 2026 edition of the sacred Amarnath Yatra will commence from April 15 at 554 designated bank branches across the country, the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has announced. The move marks the formal start of preparations for one of Hinduism’s most revered annual pilgrimages to the holy cave shrine of Lord Shiva, nestled in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the Shrine Board, the yatra will be held from July 3 to August 9, 2026, spanning approximately 38 days during the auspicious month of Shravan. Every year, thousands of devotees undertake this spiritually significant yet physically demanding journey to seek blessings at the naturally formed ice lingam inside the Amarnath cave, situated at an altitude of about 3,888 metres.
First-Come, First-Served Registration with Quotas
The SASB has clarified that registrations will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to fixed daily quotas for each route. This system is aimed at ensuring smooth management of pilgrim flow and maintaining safety standards in the high-altitude terrain.
Pilgrims can choose between two routes — the traditional Pahalgam (Chandanwari) route, known for its gradual ascent, and the Baltal route, which is shorter but steeper. Both routes ultimately converge at the holy cave shrine, though they differ significantly in distance, terrain, and duration.
Technology-Driven Process Introduced
In a bid to enhance transparency and efficiency, the Shrine Board has incorporated Aadhaar-based biometric eKYC authentication into the registration process. Once the verification is successfully completed, yatra permits will be generated online through the official SASB portal.
Officials stated that in case of technical issues with biometric verification, a fallback provision for manual data entry along with webcam-based photograph capture has also been arranged. Additionally, Aadhaar details will be used to issue RFID tags, which pilgrims must carry during the journey for tracking and security purposes.
Offline and Online Registration Options
Devotees opting for offline registration can visit any of the 554 authorised bank branches, including those of Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, and Jammu & Kashmir Bank, among others. A comprehensive state-wise list of these branches is available on the official SASB website.
Applicants will be required to fill out a registration form and submit essential documents such as a valid Aadhaar card or other government-issued photo identification, a recent passport-size photograph, and a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC). The registration fee has been set at approximately ₹150 per pilgrim and is non-refundable.
Online registration is also expected to begin around the same time through the SASB portal. This will involve OTP-based verification linked to a registered mobile number and email ID. Authorities have advised pilgrims to provide accurate contact details to avoid complications.
Strict Health and Eligibility Criteria
Keeping in mind the challenging nature of the pilgrimage, the Shrine Board has retained strict eligibility norms. The minimum age for participation is generally 13 years. Pilgrims are strongly advised to undergo medical consultation before undertaking the journey due to risks such as altitude sickness, unpredictable weather, and physical exertion.
Submission of a valid Compulsory Health Certificate issued by an authorised medical practitioner is mandatory. This ensures that only those physically fit for high-altitude travel are permitted to undertake the yatra.
Spiritual Significance and Infrastructure Preparedness
The Amarnath Yatra holds immense spiritual importance for devotees, symbolising unwavering faith, endurance, and devotion. The दर्शन (darshan) of the ice stalagmite, believed to represent Lord Shiva, is considered sacred and is said to grant spiritual liberation.
In recent years, the Shrine Board has significantly enhanced infrastructure and facilities along the pilgrimage routes. Services such as helicopter transport, pony rides, and palki (palanquin) options are available to assist pilgrims, particularly the elderly and physically challenged. Medical camps, security arrangements, and emergency response systems have also been strengthened.
Advisory for Pilgrims
Authorities have urged devotees to plan their यात्रा well in advance, adhere strictly to guidelines, and regularly check the official website for updates related to weather conditions, travel advisories, and safety protocols. Maintaining cleanliness and respecting the sanctity of the pilgrimage routes have also been emphasised.
With registration set to open on April 15, the SASB aims to ensure that the 2026 Amarnath Yatra is well-organised, सुरक्षित, and spiritually fulfilling for all participants. Given the limited slots under the quota system, pilgrims are encouraged to register early to secure their preferred dates.
The Amarnath Yatra continues to stand as a powerful symbol of India’s spiritual heritage, drawing devotees from across the country and around the world every year.
