DFCCIL Explores Major Expansion of Rapid Cargo Services with Amazon India and Logistics Partners

In a significant step towards revolutionising express parcel logistics in India, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) convened a high-level meeting to deliberate on scaling up operations under its Joint Parcel Product – Rapid Cargo Services (JPP-RCS) initiative.

The meeting, focused on expanding time-sensitive parcel movement through the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC), was chaired by Shri Shobhit Bhatnagar, Director (Operations & Business Development), DFCCIL. It was convened by Shri S.P. Verma, GGM (Business Development & Business Assurance), and saw active participation from senior officials including Shri Nagendra Bisht, JGM (Business Development & Public Relations), Shri Satveer Singh, DGM (Operations), and other key executives.

Representatives from Amazon India and Harsh Logistics also joined the discussions, signalling strong industry interest in leveraging rail-based solutions for faster and more reliable cargo movement.

Amazon India holds the distinction of being the first major e-commerce player to utilise the Dedicated Freight Corridor for parcel services. When DFCCIL commissioned its High Speed Small Cargo services between New Rewari and New Palanpur on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), Amazon quickly partnered to move time-critical shipments efficiently. This pioneering collaboration marked a shift from traditional road-dominated logistics to a faster, greener, and more predictable rail alternative.

The recent meeting centred on three key pillars: scaling up parcel movement solutions, strengthening first- and last-mile connectivity, and unlocking new opportunities for time-sensitive cargo using the high-speed capabilities of the DFC network. Participants reviewed the current performance of JPP-RCS, identified operational bottlenecks, and brainstormed strategies to increase volume, improve service reliability, and expand geographical coverage.

Boosting Efficiency Through Dedicated Corridors

The Dedicated Freight Corridors, particularly the Western and Eastern arms, are designed to transform India’s freight landscape by segregating passenger and freight traffic. With trains capable of running at significantly higher speeds than mixed-traffic routes, the DFC offers a compelling advantage for express parcel and small cargo services.

Under the Joint Parcel Product – Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCS), DFCCIL aims to provide scheduled, time-bound movement of parcels with greater predictability. This initiative allows e-commerce giants, logistics service providers, and businesses dealing in high-value or perishable goods to plan their supply chains more effectively, reduce inventory holding costs, and respond faster to market demands.

Discussions highlighted the potential to integrate seamless multimodal connectivity. By enhancing last-mile delivery partnerships and optimising terminal infrastructure, DFCCIL and its partners seek to create an end-to-end solution that competes effectively with pure road transport while offering lower costs and reduced carbon emissions.

Strategic Importance for India’s Logistics Sector

India’s booming e-commerce and organised retail sectors have created massive demand for swift, reliable logistics. Traditional road freight, while flexible, often suffers from congestion, delays, and higher environmental impact. Rail-based solutions on the DFC address these pain points by delivering consistent transit times and higher payload efficiency.

DFCCIL officials emphasised that expanding JPP-RCS aligns with the national Gati Shakti vision of integrated multimodal infrastructure. By encouraging private sector participation — as seen with Amazon and Harsh Logistics — the corporation aims to develop a robust ecosystem for rail parcel services that can eventually cover multiple routes across the DFC network.

The involvement of Amazon India is particularly noteworthy. The e-commerce leader has been actively exploring rail options to diversify its logistics mix beyond roadways. Successful trials and early operations on the Rewari–Palanpur corridor have demonstrated the viability of high-speed small cargo services for time-sensitive shipments.

Harsh Logistics, a key player in freight forwarding and multimodal transport, is expected to contribute operational expertise and help bridge gaps in terminal handling and distribution networks.

Way Forward

Participants at the meeting agreed to work on detailed action plans, including identification of additional high-potential routes, technology integration for real-time tracking, and capacity augmentation at key DFC terminals. The focus remains on making Rapid Cargo Services more attractive for a wider range of customers — from large e-commerce platforms to MSMEs requiring faster market access.

This initiative is expected to not only boost DFCCIL’s non-bulk cargo revenue but also support broader goals of reducing logistics costs as a percentage of GDP, decongesting national highways, and promoting sustainable transportation.

As India’s Dedicated Freight Corridors near full operational maturity, collaborations like the JPP-RCS are set to play a pivotal role in reshaping the country’s freight movement paradigm. With strong interest from industry leaders such as Amazon, DFCCIL is well-positioned to accelerate the adoption of rail for express parcel logistics in the coming years.
