Indian Railways Commissions KAVACH 4.0 for First Time on South Central Railway
Indian Railways has commissioned KAVACH Version 4.0 for the first time on South Central Railway (SCR), marking a significant step in the expansion of its indigenous Automatic Train Protection system. The upgraded system has been commissioned over 108 Route Kilometres on the Malkajgiri–Kamareddi section of the Hyderabad Division, upgrading the existing KAVACH Version 3.2 installation.
The deployment incorporates technological improvements based on operational experience gained from KAVACH Version 3.2, which has already been deployed across 1,465 Route Kilometres on South Central Railway. KAVACH 4.0 was approved by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in July 2024 and is being progressively expanded across the Indian Railways network.
Among the major improvements in Version 4.0 is enhanced location accuracy, allowing more precise determination of a train’s position. The system also provides improved information on signal aspects in larger railway yards, strengthening situational awareness for train crews.
Another important enhancement is the station-to-station KAVACH interface through Optical Fibre Cable (OFC). The system also features a direct interface with existing Electronic Interlocking systems, enabling closer integration between train protection and railway signalling infrastructure.
KAVACH is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system designed to enhance railway safety by continuously monitoring train movement and speed. It assists the Loco Pilot in maintaining prescribed speed limits and can automatically apply brakes when required. The system is designed to help prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), control train speeds in critical situations and reduce the risk of collisions.
The technology also supports safer train operations during adverse weather conditions. Because KAVACH is a safety-critical system, it requires the highest level of safety certification, Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4).
The implementation of KAVACH involves extensive infrastructure along the railway route. This includes Station KAVACH equipment at stations and block sections, RFID tags installed along the track, telecommunications towers, OFC connectivity and Loco KAVACH equipment on locomotives operating over equipped sections.
The latest commissioning on South Central Railway comes amid a broader expansion of KAVACH 4.0 across the country. As of July 2026, KAVACH 4.0 had been commissioned over 2,490 Route Kilometres, covering high-density sections of the Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah routes.
Indian Railways has also continued approving new KAVACH 4.0 projects in recent months. In September 2026, ₹252 crore was approved for deployment over 607.7 Route Kilometres in Lucknow Division, while ₹170 crore was approved for the remaining 712 Route Kilometres of Moradabad Division.
The commissioning of KAVACH 4.0 on the Malkajgiri–Kamareddi section therefore represents both an upgrade of an existing safety system and an expansion of the latest-generation technology into another operational section of Indian Railways. With improved positioning, signalling information, communications and integration with electronic interlocking, the upgraded system is intended to strengthen train protection and provide a technological foundation for wider deployment across the railway network.
