Indian Railways Achieves Record Freight Loading of 145.07 Million Tonnes in October 2026

Food Grain Loading Surges 26.3%, Domestic Coal Rises 16%; Freight Transportation Grows 8.32% Year-on-Year

Indian Railways has registered its highest-ever freight loading for the month of October, transporting 145.07 million tonnes of goods during October 2026. This represents an increase of 8.32 per cent over the 133.93 million tonnes loaded in October 2025, highlighting the continued growth in rail-based freight transportation and the national logistics network.

The strong performance reflects Indian Railways’ sustained efforts to improve freight operations, enhance transportation capacity and ensure the timely movement of essential commodities, industrial raw materials and finished products across the country.

The growth was supported by increased transportation of food grains, domestic coal, iron ore, steel, containers and other commodities. Several key freight segments recorded positive growth, with food grains and domestic coal emerging as major contributors to the overall increase.

Food Grain Loading Records Highest Growth Among Major Commodities

Food grain transportation registered particularly strong growth during October 2026, increasing by 26.3 per cent compared to the corresponding month last year. The substantial rise indicates increased movement of agricultural produce through the railway network, strengthening the transportation of essential food commodities across different parts of the country.

Domestic coal loading also recorded significant growth of 16 per cent during the month. This was accompanied by an 11 per cent increase in the transportation of Balance Other Goods and a 10.4 per cent rise in clinker loading.

Other important commodities also contributed to the overall growth in freight transportation.

Domestic container loading increased by 6.3 per cent, while iron ore loading registered growth of 5 per cent. Mineral oil transportation recorded an increase of 1.9 per cent, and finished steel loading grew by 0.5 per cent over October 2025.

The growth across multiple commodity segments reflects the continued importance of Indian Railways in supporting various sectors of the economy, including agriculture, power generation, manufacturing, construction and trade.

Coal Supply to Power Houses Increases by 19.5%

Indian Railways significantly enhanced domestic coal transportation during October 2026 to meet the growing requirements of power generation facilities.

The national transporter supplied an average of 469.8 coal rakes per day to power houses during October 2026, compared to 393.2 rakes per day in October 2025. This represents an increase of 19.5 per cent in the average daily supply.

The higher movement of domestic coal highlights the critical role played by Indian Railways in maintaining the country’s energy supply chain. Efficient coal transportation is particularly important for ensuring adequate fuel availability at thermal power stations and supporting uninterrupted electricity generation.

The increase in daily rake supply also reflects the railway network’s efforts to improve coordination between coal-producing regions, transportation infrastructure and power generation facilities.

Freight Loading Reaches 978.78 Million Tonnes During April–October

The impressive performance in October builds on the growth achieved during the first seven months of the financial year 2026-27.

During April–October 2026, Indian Railways transported a total of 978.78 million tonnes of freight, compared to 935.10 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

This represents an increase of 43.68 million tonnes, registering year-on-year growth of 4.67 per cent.

The cumulative freight loading performance indicates sustained demand for railway transportation and the growing contribution of railways to the movement of bulk commodities and industrial goods.

The increase in freight volumes is also significant from the perspective of India’s logistics sector, as rail transportation offers an important alternative for moving large quantities of goods over long distances.

Indian Railways has been focusing on improving line capacity, reducing transportation bottlenecks, enhancing terminal infrastructure and strengthening connectivity to major industrial and commercial centres.

These initiatives are aimed at improving freight handling efficiency, reducing transit time and making rail transportation more competitive.

Passenger Traffic Also Registers Growth

Alongside the strong performance in freight transportation, Indian Railways continued to witness growth in passenger traffic during October 2026.

The national transporter carried 64.72 crore passengers during the month, compared to 63.52 crore passengers in October 2025.

This represents an increase of 1.20 crore passengers, indicating continued demand for railway services across suburban and non-suburban networks.

The positive trend was also visible in the cumulative passenger traffic figures for April–October 2026.

During the seven-month period, Indian Railways carried 443.8 crore passengers, compared to 431.4 crore passengers during the corresponding period of the previous year.

The cumulative passenger traffic therefore registered an increase of 12.4 crore passengers.

A segment-wise analysis shows that Non-Suburban passenger traffic recorded growth of 4.2 per cent during April–October 2026, while Suburban passenger traffic increased by 1.7 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year.

The growth in both segments reflects the continuing importance of railways as an affordable and accessible mode of transportation for millions of passengers.

Indian Railways Strengthens Its Role in India’s Logistics Growth

The latest freight and passenger traffic figures underline Indian Railways’ expanding role in supporting India’s economic activities.

The record freight loading of 145.07 million tonnes in October 2026, coupled with cumulative loading of 978.78 million tonnes during April–October, demonstrates the sustained growth of railway-based transportation.

The increased movement of food grains, coal, industrial commodities and containers also highlights the railway network’s importance in connecting agricultural markets, manufacturing hubs, power plants and consumption centres.

Through infrastructure expansion, capacity augmentation, improved operational efficiency and better freight management, Indian Railways continues to strengthen its transportation capabilities.

The growth in freight and passenger traffic reflects the national transporter’s ongoing efforts to meet rising transportation demand while supporting the country’s broader economic and logistics objectives.
