India Approves First Hydrogen-Powered DEMU Train for Jind-Sonipat Route

Railways Clears 10-Car Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trainset With Advanced Safety Systems and Green Energy Technology for Northern Railway Operations at 75 kmph

India’s railway network is set to enter a new era of green transportation after the Ministry of Railways approved the introduction of a 10-car hydrogen fuel cell-based DEMU trainset on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway. The 1200 KW Hydrogen DEMU will operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph and is designed to run using hydrogen fuel cell technology, marking a major push towards sustainable rail mobility.

The approval follows recommendations and certification from RDSO and the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety. The train will include hydrogen-powered driving power cars and trailer coaches built as per Medha and ICF specifications. Railway authorities said the dedicated section will operate under strict safety protocols and track standards defined under IRPWM 2024.

Hydrogen storage and refueling infrastructure has already been licensed at Jind, Haryana, with compressed hydrogen gas facilities developed for fueling operations. Authorities have directed strict compliance with all safety norms related to hydrogen production, storage, dispensing and onboard systems.

Officials highlighted that advanced monitoring systems, leak detectors, flame sensors and emergency shutoff mechanisms have been installed to ensure fail-safe operations. Dedicated training and competency certification will also be mandatory for staff handling hydrogen refueling stations and onboard train operations.

The Railway Board has also instructed Northern Railway to maintain critical spare parts including valves, sensors and compressor components to avoid operational disruptions. A standby compressor system is to be added within six months to strengthen reliability. Additional provisions including protective covers for emergency stop systems, secure locking arrangements and larger monitoring displays are also being implemented.

The hydrogen trainset will initially operate only on the Jind-Sonipat route, while scheduled maintenance will be carried out at Shakurbasti depot. During the first three months of operations, trained technical staff will accompany the train to address any en-route technical issues.

Railway officials said the project is an important milestone in reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy-based transportation. The ministry has also advised exploring alternate sources of green hydrogen fuel for future expansion. If successful, the project could pave the way for wider deployment of hydrogen-powered trains across India’s railway network.
