Heatwave Intensifies Across India as Temperatures Cross 44°C in Multiple Cities

A severe heatwave continues to grip large parts of India, with several cities recording maximum temperatures above 43°C, according to the India Meteorological Department. The latest data released at 5:30 PM IST shows widespread above-normal temperatures across north, central, and parts of western and eastern India.

Rajasthan’s Sriganganagar emerged as the hottest location in the country, recording a scorching 44.5°C, which is 5.3°C above normal. Close behind were Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh and Amravati in Maharashtra, both recording 44.4°C, indicating the intensity of the ongoing heatwave.

Several other cities also reported extreme temperatures. Akola in Maharashtra recorded 44.3°C, while Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh and Jharsuguda in Odisha touched 44.0°C. Wardha in Maharashtra and Bathinda in Punjab also recorded similar highs, underlining the widespread nature of the heat conditions.

In Uttar Pradesh, multiple cities continued to reel under intense heat, with Sultanpur recording 43.8°C, followed by Varanasi at 43.4°C, and Kanpur and Agra both at 43.2°C. The persistent high temperatures have raised concerns about heat-related illnesses, especially among vulnerable populations.

Central India also experienced severe conditions, with Narmadapuram and Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh recording 43.8°C and 43.4°C respectively. Meanwhile, eastern states like Jharkhand saw temperatures soar above 43°C in Daltonganj, Saraikela, and Jamshedpur.

Haryana’s Rohtak recorded 43.3°C, with a significant departure of 4.6°C above normal, indicating unusually high temperatures for this time of the year. Similarly, Dhenkanal in Odisha recorded 43.4°C, while Bopani in Haryana and Fursatganj in Uttar Pradesh also reported temperatures above 43°C.

In southern India, Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh recorded 43.1°C, showing that the heatwave is not limited to northern regions but is affecting multiple parts of the country.

Meteorologists noted that many of these locations are experiencing temperatures 2°C to 5°C above normal, intensifying heatwave conditions. The widespread rise in temperatures is being attributed to dry weather conditions, clear skies, and prevailing atmospheric patterns that are preventing heat dissipation.

The IMD has already issued warnings for continued heatwave conditions in several states, urging people to take precautions. Authorities have advised citizens to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, stay hydrated, and take necessary measures to prevent heatstroke.

Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such high temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other health complications. Elderly people, children, and outdoor workers are particularly at risk.

With no immediate relief in sight, the heatwave is expected to persist in the coming days, especially across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and adjoining regions. However, isolated thunderstorms in some areas may bring temporary respite.

As India continues to face rising temperatures, officials are closely monitoring the situation and urging state administrations to remain prepared for any heat-related emergencies.
