Suspect Killed After Opening Fire at Secret Service Checkpoint Near White House Washington, D.C

A man was fatally shot by U.S. Secret Service officers after he approached a security checkpoint near the White House and opened fire on Saturday evening, according to official statements from the Secret Service.
The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. ET at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the White House complex.

According to the U.S. Secret Service:
“Shortly after 6 p.m., an individual in the area of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing [at officers]. Secret Service officers returned fire, striking the suspect who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. During the shooting, one bystander was also struck by gunfire. No injuries were sustained by officers. The President was in the White House during the incident; however, no protectees or operations were impacted.”
The agency noted that it remains unclear whether the bystander was hit by the suspect’s gunfire or during the exchange with officers.
