India’s First Indigenous Bullet Train ‘B28’ Gets Major Boost as Ashwini Vaishnaw Inaugurates ‘Aditya’ Complex in Bengaluru

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw today inaugurated the ‘Aditya’ Complex at the BEML campus in Tippasandra, Bengaluru — a specialised hub dedicated to producing advanced rolling stock, including high-speed coaches for the upcoming B-28 indigenous bullet train.

The inauguration marks a significant milestone in India’s push for self-reliant high-speed rail manufacturing. The Aditya Complex is designed to strengthen domestic capabilities in developing complex high-speed rail technology, reducing dependence on imports and building a robust engineering ecosystem.

Key Highlights from the Inauguration

Speaking at the event, Ashwini Vaishnaw described high-speed rail technology as “highly complex” and called its indigenous development “a significant milestone for India’s engineering ecosystem.” He added that these advancements will “redefine inter-city mobility, making major urban centres function like interconnected hubs.”

Vaishnaw highlighted the potential impact, stating that with high-speed rail, travel time between Chennai and Bengaluru could be reduced to just 73 minutes, bringing the two cities closer economically and socially.

He praised BEML engineers, noting that their work is “central to building next-generation transport systems” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive infrastructure growth.

About B-28 Indigenous Bullet Train

The B-28 is India’s first fully homegrown high-speed trainset, being manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) under a contract awarded by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai.

  • Design Speed: Up to 280 kmph
  • Operational Speed: Expected around 250 kmph in regular service
  • Configuration: Eight-coach fully air-conditioned trainsets with modern amenities including reclining/rotatable seats, facilities for passengers with reduced mobility, and onboard infotainment systems.

The first B-28 trainset is targeted to be ready by March 2027. It will initially operate on the Surat–Vapi section (approx. 97 km) of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, with passenger services expected to commence by August 2027.

Broader High-Speed Rail Push

The Aditya Complex inauguration aligns with the government’s ambitious plans announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, which included seven new bullet train corridors aimed at making India self-sufficient (“Atmanirbhar”) in high-speed rail manufacturing.

The flagship Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, being executed with Japanese technical assistance, continues to progress steadily, with over 50% physical completion in several segments. The full 508-km corridor is expected to slash travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to around two hours.

Vaishnaw also announced additional rail services during the event, including a new Mail Express with LHB coaches between Mumbai and Bengaluru via Hubli, an upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, and a Vande Bharat Express between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, with plans to further connect coastal cities.

Significance

The development of the Aditya Complex and the B-28 project represents a proud “Made in Bharat” achievement. It not only supports faster, safer, and more efficient inter-city travel but also creates skilled jobs and boosts India’s advanced manufacturing capabilities in the rail sector.

With key technical challenges — such as electrification and safety systems like Automated Emergency Braking — being addressed, India is steadily moving towards becoming a global leader in high-speed rail technology.
