New IRCTC Website Beta Goes Live, Promises Faster Ticket Booking and Simpler User Experience

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched the beta version of its redesigned ticket booking website at 9:00 PM on July 15, marking a major step towards modernising India’s online railway reservation system. The beta portal allows users to experience the new interface, explore its features and provide feedback before the full-scale rollout. The trial version can be accessed through the existing IRCTC website, where a dedicated link has been placed on the homepage.

The redesigned website is part of a broader initiative to enhance the online ticket booking experience for millions of railway passengers. According to IRCTC, the improvements incorporated in the new portal were based on suggestions received from students of the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) during an interaction with Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The students actively participated in the design process and recommended several changes to make the platform more user-friendly and efficient.

The IRCTC website, first launched in 2002, has remained India’s primary online railway ticket booking platform for over two decades. Today, it handles an average of 14.5 lakh ticket bookings every day, making it one of the busiest e-commerce portals in the country. With passenger expectations evolving rapidly, IRCTC has redesigned the platform to offer a cleaner interface, simpler navigation and faster booking.

The beta version introduces four major improvements aimed at reducing booking time and improving overall usability.

One of the most noticeable changes is the removal of unnecessary obstacles during ticket booking. The new portal eliminates excessive captchas, avoids unnecessary pop-up windows, removes flashing graphics and reduces visual distractions, allowing users to focus on completing their bookings quickly and smoothly.

Another significant enhancement is the improved display of seat availability. Passengers can now view seat availability across all travel classes more conveniently, enabling quicker comparison of options before making a reservation.

The booking process itself has also been streamlined. IRCTC has reduced the number of steps required to complete a reservation, resulting in a faster checkout experience. This is expected to save valuable time, especially during peak booking hours when users compete for limited seats on popular trains.

Frequent travellers will also benefit from a new feature that allows saved passenger details, making repeat bookings easier and eliminating the need to enter passenger information every time a ticket is booked.

According to IRCTC, the current release is a beta version, meaning it is intended for public testing before the final launch. Feedback received from users during this phase will be carefully evaluated and incorporated into future updates to further improve the portal’s performance and customer experience.

The website revamp is only one part of a much larger technological upgrade underway across Indian Railways. In parallel with the website redesign, IRCTC and the Railways are modernising the Passenger Reservation Engine (PRS)—the core system that powers railway ticket bookings across IRCTC and other reservation platforms.

Officials said upgrading the decades-old reservation engine has been a technically challenging exercise because the system has had to remain operational while improvements are being implemented. Once completed, the new Passenger Reservation Engine will be integrated with the redesigned IRCTC portal, delivering a more robust, faster and scalable booking platform capable of handling significantly higher passenger demand.

The fully integrated new IRCTC portal, supported by the upgraded reservation engine, is expected to become operational within the next few weeks.

IRCTC has appealed to users to actively explore the beta website and share their suggestions and feedback. The corporation said public input will play an important role in refining the portal before its nationwide rollout, ensuring that the final version delivers a faster, simpler and more convenient ticket booking experience for millions of railway passengers across the country.
