Railways Recruits Over 43,000 Employees in FY26, Ashwini Vaishnaw Pushes Technology-Driven Hiring Reforms

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday conducted a high-level review of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) recruitment process and directed officials to further strengthen transparency, accuracy and efficiency through the increased use of technology. During the review meeting with senior Indian Railways officials, the minister emphasized faster recruitment cycles, wider use of Computer Based Tests (CBTs), expansion of tablet-based examinations and improved communication with candidates.
The review comes at a time when Indian Railways is undertaking one of its largest recruitment drives, with tens of thousands of vacancies being filled through a structured annual recruitment calendar designed to bring predictability and transparency to the hiring process.
According to data presented during the meeting, Indian Railways recruited 43,781 candidates during FY 2025-26 through completed recruitment cycles covering 47,084 notified vacancies across six major categories. The recruitment drive reflects the railway network’s efforts to strengthen its workforce while ensuring merit-based selection through technology-enabled examinations.
FY 2025-26 Recruitment Performance
The largest share of appointments was made in operational and technical categories, particularly Assistant Loco Pilots and Technicians.
| Category | Vacancies Notified | Candidates Recruited |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs) | 18,799 | 17,193 |
| Technicians | 14,298 | 13,416 |
| Sub-Inspectors (RPF) | 452 | 450 |
| Constables (RPF) | 4,208 | 4,205 |
| Junior Engineers (JE)/DMS/CMA | 7,951 | 7,333 |
| Paramedical Staff | 1,376 | 1,184 |
| Total | 47,084 | 43,781 |
The figures indicate that recruitment processes for most categories are nearing completion, with a large majority of notified vacancies already filled.
Assistant Loco Pilots accounted for the highest number of appointments, reflecting Indian Railways’ continued focus on strengthening operational safety and locomotive management. Recruitment of more than 14,000 technicians also highlights the importance being placed on maintenance, modernization and infrastructure support functions across the railway network.
Technology at the Centre of Recruitment Reforms
During the review, Vaishnaw stressed that the recruitment ecosystem must continue evolving through technological innovations.
The minister noted that all departmental examinations are now being conducted through the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. He instructed officials to further expand tablet-based examinations wherever feasible, describing them as a faster, more efficient and candidate-friendly approach.
Railway officials informed the minister that the recruitment process involves one of the country’s largest examination systems. RRB examinations are conducted across multiple cities and examination centres nationwide, often in several shifts due to the huge number of applicants.
To ensure accessibility and fairness, examinations are conducted in as many as 15 languages, allowing candidates from diverse linguistic backgrounds to participate without language barriers.
Officials highlighted that managing a multi-city, multi-shift and multilingual examination framework requires extensive technological infrastructure, rigorous standardization and robust monitoring systems to ensure fairness and transparency.
Major Recruitment Examinations Underway
Several important recruitment examinations have already been conducted, while document verification and empanelment processes are currently underway.
Recruitment Cycles in Progress
| Examination | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| NTPC (Graduate Level) | 8,113 |
| NTPC (Under-Graduate Level) | 3,445 |
| Ministerial & Isolated Categories | 1,036 |
| Technicians | 6,238 |
| Paramedical Categories | 434 |
Railway authorities informed the minister that document verification has already commenced for several categories. Results for certain typing and teaching-related categories are expected shortly.
The Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) recruitment remains among the largest recruitment exercises undertaken by Indian Railways due to the enormous number of applicants competing for administrative and commercial positions.
Massive Hiring Pipeline Ahead
The review meeting also examined recruitment processes expected to culminate in final selections over the next six months to one year.
Upcoming Major Recruitments
| Recruitment Category | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| Level-1 Posts | 32,438 |
| Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs) | 10,970 |
| Section Controllers | 368 |
| Junior Engineers (JE)/DMS/CMA | 2,585 |
| NTPC Graduate Level | 5,810 |
| NTPC Under-Graduate Level | 3,058 |
| Total Upcoming Vacancies | 55,229 |
The largest ongoing recruitment exercise is for Level-1 posts, involving more than 32,000 vacancies. Recruitment for Assistant Loco Pilots is also progressing rapidly, with nearly 11,000 vacancies under consideration.
Particularly notable is the NTPC Under-Graduate recruitment examination, which is expected to attract approximately 25 lakh candidates, underlining the immense scale of railway recruitment activities and the importance of efficient examination management systems.
According to the projected schedule reviewed by the minister, several of these recruitment cycles are expected to culminate in empanelments between late 2026 and early 2027.
Annual Recruitment Calendar Wins Positive Response
Vaishnaw observed that the introduction of an annual recruitment calendar, supported by quarterly vacancy notifications, has been positively received by candidates across the country.
The minister stated that predictable recruitment schedules allow aspirants to plan their preparation more effectively and reduce uncertainty associated with recruitment announcements.
The calendar-based approach represents a significant shift from earlier recruitment practices by creating a more structured and transparent system for job seekers.
Officials said the framework has also enabled Railway Recruitment Boards to streamline examination planning, resource allocation and result processing.
Focus on Transparency and Candidate Confidence
A major area of discussion during the review meeting was strengthening communication with candidates.
The Railway Minister directed RRBs to improve outreach and information dissemination mechanisms to ensure that candidates receive timely and accurate updates regarding examinations, results and recruitment stages.
He emphasized that misinformation and rumours related to recruitment must be countered swiftly through official communication channels. According to the minister, maintaining candidate confidence is critical for the credibility of the recruitment system.
Officials were asked to ensure that authentic information reaches applicants promptly and that grievance redressal mechanisms remain responsive.
Multilingual Examinations Expand Accessibility
The review also highlighted the success of multilingual examinations in increasing inclusivity.
Indian Railways conducts examinations across multiple languages and locations, allowing candidates from different regions and linguistic backgrounds to compete on an equal footing. Officials noted that language accessibility has become a crucial component of recruitment reforms, helping widen participation and reduce barriers for aspirants from remote and non-English-speaking areas.
The multilingual examination model is particularly important given the nationwide nature of railway recruitment, which attracts applicants from virtually every state and union territory.
Railways Targets Faster and Fairer Recruitment
The review meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening a fair, transparent and merit-based recruitment framework supported by technology and structured planning.
With more than 43,000 appointments already completed in FY 2025-26 and over 55,000 additional vacancies under active recruitment, Indian Railways is continuing one of the largest public-sector hiring programmes in the country.
The emphasis on Computer Based Tests, tablet-enabled examinations, multilingual accessibility, annual recruitment calendars and improved candidate communication reflects a broader effort to modernize recruitment processes and reduce delays.
As recruitment activity accelerates, the Railways aims to ensure that talented young candidates across the country can access employment opportunities through a system that is increasingly transparent, technology-driven and accountable.
