NTA Introduces Candidate-Friendly Changes for NEET UG 2026
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a series of candidate-friendly measures for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026, aimed at making the examination process more convenient while maintaining fairness, security, and transparency. The entrance examination for medical aspirants is scheduled to be held on June 21, 2026.
According to a public notice issued by the NTA, the changes have been introduced after considering feedback received from candidates over the years. The agency stated that the reforms are intended to reduce stress during the examination and ensure that students get the full benefit of the allotted test duration.
One of the most significant changes is the extension of the examination window. NEET UG 2026 will now be conducted over 195 minutes, from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM. The revised schedule includes the time required for mandatory examination formalities such as signing attendance sheets, verification procedures, and other invigilation-related activities.
The NTA said the extended examination window has been designed to ensure that administrative procedures do not eat into the actual time available for candidates to attempt the question paper. Over the years, several students had expressed concerns that pre-examination formalities reduced their effective writing time. The new arrangement seeks to address these concerns and provide a more comfortable testing experience.
Another major change relates to the rough-work facility available inside the question paper booklet. The NTA has increased the space provided for calculations, diagrams, and other rough work. Candidates will now receive four rough-work pages instead of two, giving them additional space to solve numerical problems and perform calculations during the examination.
The agency believes that the additional pages will particularly benefit students appearing for science-based questions that require extensive calculations and rough work. The move is expected to reduce the need for candidates to manage limited space and help them focus more effectively on solving questions.
The NTA has also redesigned the placement of rough-work pages within the question paper booklet. Previously, rough-work pages were provided only at the end of the booklet. While the arrangement worked satisfactorily for many candidates, feedback indicated that it was less convenient for some students, especially left-handed candidates.
To address this issue, two rough-work pages have now been placed immediately after the instruction page at the beginning of the booklet, while the remaining two pages will continue to be available at the end. The revised layout has been incorporated in both English and regional language versions of the question paper.
Officials said the change is intended to improve accessibility and convenience for all candidates, regardless of their writing preferences. By providing rough-work pages at both the beginning and end of the booklet, students can choose the section that is most comfortable for them during the examination.
In its notice, the NTA emphasized that even small improvements in examination design can significantly reduce candidate stress during high-stakes tests. The agency said the latest reforms have been introduced with the objective of making the examination process more candidate-centric without compromising on the highest standards of fairness, integrity, and security.
NEET UG is India’s largest medical entrance examination and serves as the gateway for admission to undergraduate medical courses across the country. With lakhs of students appearing every year, even minor procedural changes can have a substantial impact on the overall examination experience.
The NTA has advised all candidates to carefully read the instructions provided in their admit cards and the Information Bulletin before appearing for the examination. Candidates have also been urged to cooperate with examination staff and follow all prescribed guidelines to ensure the smooth conduct of the test.
The newly announced measures reflect the NTA’s continued efforts to enhance the examination experience while ensuring that NEET UG 2026 remains a fair, secure, and transparent assessment for aspiring medical students across India.
