Centre Orders Delhi Gymkhana Club to Vacate Premises by June 5, 2026

In a major development, the Government of India has issued a formal order directing the Delhi Gymkhana Club to hand over its sprawling 27.3-acre premises at 2, Safdarjung Road, New Delhi, by June 5, 2026.
The directive was issued by the Land & Development Office (L&DO) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs vide letter No. L-II(B)-17(9)/99/137 dated 22nd May 2026. The government has invoked its powers of re-entry under Clause 4 of the original Lease Deed.
Key Highlights of the Order:
- The premises, originally leased to the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club (now Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd.), are being resumed for public purpose.
- The land is described as being in a “highly sensitive and strategic area” of Delhi and is critically required for strengthening defence infrastructure, public security, governance, and other vital institutional needs.
- Upon re-entry, the entire 27.3 acres of land along with all buildings, structures, lawns, and fittings will vest absolutely in the President of India through the Land & Development Office.
- The club has been directed to hand over peaceful possession to L&DO officials on or before 5th June 2026. In case of non-compliance, possession will be taken as per law, with police assistance if required.
Background
The Delhi Gymkhana Club, one of the most prestigious and exclusive social clubs in the national capital, has been operating from this prime location for decades. The club caters to senior bureaucrats, defence personnel, diplomats, and prominent citizens.
The government’s move comes amid a broader push to reclaim prime government land in Lutyens’ Delhi for strategic and public use. The order specifically mentions that the resumption is part of integrated development with adjoining government lands.
What Happens Next?
The Technical Section of the L&DO has been tasked with taking physical possession on June 5. Copies of the order have also been sent to the Delhi Police for necessary arrangements to maintain law and order during the takeover.
This development is likely to create ripples in Delhi’s elite social circles. The Delhi Gymkhana Club has not yet issued any official statement on the matter.
