Indian Railways Approves Major Kavach Expansion on Northern Railway Routes

In a significant move aimed at strengthening railway safety and accelerating technological modernisation, Indian Railways has sanctioned the expansion of the indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection system across major routes of Northern Railway. The project, approved at an estimated cost of around ₹362 crore, will cover nearly 1,478 route kilometres across strategically important sections of the Firozpur and Jammu divisions.

The ambitious expansion plan marks another major step in Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to deploy advanced safety technologies across the national rail network. Kavach, India’s home-grown train collision prevention system, has emerged as a key pillar of railway safety reforms and is being rapidly rolled out on high-density and sensitive rail corridors.

According to the sanctioned proposal, Kavach will be installed over approximately 1,012 route kilometres on the balance sections of the Firozpur Division. The estimated cost of this portion of the project is around ₹241 crore. The system will help improve operational safety and ensure better train protection across one of Northern Railway’s crucial operational zones.

In the Jammu Division, Kavach deployment has been approved on several important routes including the Jalandhar City JunctionJammu Tawi railway stationShri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station section, the Batala Junction railway stationPathankot Junction railway station route, and the Banihal railway stationBaramulla railway station section. Together, these routes account for nearly 466 route kilometres and the sanctioned cost for the Jammu Division works is estimated at around ₹121 crore.

Officials stated that the project scope includes installation of stationary Kavach equipment along railway tracks, along with communication infrastructure such as 40-metre towers and antenna systems. These components are essential for uninterrupted and reliable communication between locomotives, signalling systems and trackside devices, ensuring smooth functioning of the automatic protection system.

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection technology designed to prevent train collisions and enhance operational safety. Developed under the “Make in India” and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, the system automatically applies brakes if a loco pilot fails to respond to warnings or if unsafe train movement is detected. The technology continuously exchanges information between locomotives, signalling systems and railway tracks to maintain safe train operations.

Railway experts believe that expansion of Kavach on these strategically important routes will greatly improve reliability and reduce the risk of accidents. The deployment is particularly significant for Jammu and Kashmir sections where rail connectivity is expanding rapidly and operational safety remains a top priority due to challenging terrain and increasing passenger movement.

The Kavach system is also expected to improve punctuality and operational efficiency by enabling safer train handling and better traffic management. With Indian Railways moving towards modern signalling systems and enhanced digital infrastructure, Kavach has become a critical component of the national transporter’s safety roadmap.

Indian Railways has been aggressively scaling up Kavach implementation across the country following successful trials and operational deployments on select routes. The technology has gained attention as one of the world’s most cost-effective train protection systems capable of supporting large-scale deployment across diverse rail networks.

The latest sanction for Northern Railway reflects the government’s broader commitment to building a safer, smarter and technologically advanced railway network. As India continues to modernise its transportation infrastructure, projects such as Kavach are expected to play a transformative role in ensuring safer journeys for millions of passengers while strengthening operational resilience across the rail system.
