BJP Scripts Historic Victory in West Bengal: PM Modi Declares “Lotus Bloom from Gangotri to Gangasagar”

In a landmark political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the single largest party in West Bengal, ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). According to Election Commission of India (ECI) data, the BJP secured a commanding 45.75% vote share compared to TMC’s 40.82%, a swing of nearly 5 percentage points and over 29 lakh votes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed party workers at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, beginning his speech with a thunderous “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”. He described the day as historic and unprecedented.

PM Modi’s Address

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I heartily congratulate the Election Commission, all the brothers and sisters involved in the voting process, and especially the security forces. History will forever remember your contribution to maintaining the dignity of Indian democracy.”

He further stated, “The people of these five states have shown the world why our India is the Mother of Democracy… Today, not only did India’s Democracy win, but so did the Constitution. Today, our constitutional organisations and our democratic processes have won. Almost 93% voting in West Bengal was historic in itself…”

Highlighting the scale of the victory, the Prime Minister declared, “Today is a historic day. It is unprecedented. When years of efforts turn into success, the happiness that is seen on the faces of people is the same happiness that I see on the faces of BJP workers across the country today.”

In an emotional tribute, PM Modi said, “Last year, on November 14th, when the Bihar election results were announced, I told you all from this very spot that the Ganga flows beyond Bihar to the Gangasagar. And today, with Bengal’s victory, the lotus has bloomed from Gangotri to the Gangasagar. Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and now West Bengal. Today, these states, nestled around the Ganga, have the BJP and NDA in power.”

He also praised the hat-trick victory in Assam, saying, “Along with the Ganga, we have been blessed by the Brahmaputra as well. Maa Kamakhya has also blessed us. The people of Assam have placed their trust in the BJP and the NDA for the third consecutive time.”

Paying homage to party workers, especially in Bengal and Kerala, the Prime Minister said, “From today, a new chapter has been added to the destiny of Bengal. From today, Bengal has become free from fear and filled with confidence in development. Change has come to my Bengal. With this victory, in the 150th year of Vande Mataram, the people have offered their respectful tributes to Bharat Mata and to Rishi Bankim Chandra.”

He added, “Many of our workers have dedicated their lives to this victory. Several BJP women workers have had to endure immense atrocities… Today, I dedicate the success of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bengal to all such workers and their families.”

Referring to the organisational effort, PM Modi noted, “These were the first assembly elections since BJP President Nitin Nabin assumed the presidency. The guidance provided to every party worker during these elections proved invaluable in this victory.”

He concluded by saying, “Today, I respectfully bow to the people of Bengal, Assam, Puducherry, and the people of Tamil Nadu and Keralam… I also heartily congratulate the millions of BJP workers. Every BJP worker, big or small, has once again performed wonders. They have made the lotus bloom… As a party worker, I share the joy of every BJP worker. Today is a special day… This is a day of trust. Trust in India’s great democracy. Trust in the politics of performance… Trust in the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’.”

Strong Performance Across States

The BJP also registered impressive wins in by-elections in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Nagaland, and Tripura. NDA leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar won with a landslide margin. Assam gave the BJP-NDA a third consecutive victory.

Major Setbacks for Opposition

The results represent a crushing defeat for the Trinamool Congress. Once considered invincible in Bengal, the party saw its vote share decline significantly amid strong anti-incumbency over issues of governance, law and order, and alleged syndicate raj.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reacted sharply, saying, “More than 100 seats BJP looted. The Election Commission is the BJP’s commission… Whatever the Election Commission has done, along with the Central Forces and the PM & Home Minister, is totally illegal. It is loot, loot, loot. We will bounce back.”

Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury admitted the scale of the shift, stating, “In Bengal, a saffron wave has emerged. People hoped for change, but that the TMC party would disappear in such a way was beyond our imagination.”

The Left parties and Congress suffered further erosion. CPI(M) managed only 4.38% and Congress a mere 3.05% vote share, underscoring their marginalisation in the state they once dominated.

BJP National President Nitin Nabin’s Reaction

BJP National President Nitin Nabin congratulated workers and paid tribute to their sacrifices. He said, “In the coming times, South India will also bloom with the lotus of the BJP… This victory has been achieved after a lot of struggle. For years, the way the Trinamool government and the Left kept the people of West Bengal in a violent environment, with a dictatorial attitude, created an atmosphere of complete fear. Today, I salute the lives of our workers and the sacrifices they made… We unequivocally congratulate our leader” (Prime Minister Narendra Modi).

Political Significance

This verdict marks a tectonic shift in West Bengal politics. The BJP’s rise from near-zero presence a decade ago to becoming the largest party reflects successful expansion into new social and geographical territories. The high voter turnout of nearly 93% in West Bengal and the clear mandate signal strong public desire for change and development.

Political analysts point to several factors behind the BJP’s success — effective campaign strategy, welfare delivery, promise of industrial development, and a strong narrative of “fearless Bengal” against alleged politics of intimidation.

PM Modi’s reference to “Maa Ganga” and “Gangotri to Gangasagar” powerfully captures the BJP’s consolidation along the Ganga belt. With victories in key Hindi heartland states and now Bengal, the party has significantly strengthened its eastern footprint.

As Bengal prepares for a new government, all eyes will be on how smoothly power transition occurs and what strategy the TMC adopts in opposition. For the BJP, the challenge now shifts from winning the election to delivering on the promises of development, jobs, and good governance in a state known for its complex political culture.

This decisive mandate not only strengthens the BJP nationally but also opens a new chapter in Bengal’s political journey — one defined by the lotus blooming in the land of the tiger and the Ganga.
