AI-Powered Transformation: Indian Railways Boosts Safety, Communication & Passenger Experience
Over 1,800 Stations Equipped with Smart Surveillance, 1,400+ Stations Get Real-Time Announcements as Digital Infrastructure Sees Major Upgrade in 2025–26

Indian Railways has significantly strengthened its telecom and digital infrastructure during 2025–26, deploying advanced AI-driven systems and communication technologies to enhance passenger safety, operational efficiency, and overall travel experience across the network.
In a major passenger-centric initiative, real-time automatic train announcements are now operational at 1,405 railway stations, ensuring seamless delivery of train-related information. These systems, integrated with the National Train Enquiry System, provide accurate and timely updates to passengers, reducing uncertainty and improving station experience.
Safety measures have also been substantially upgraded with the installation of AI-enabled video surveillance systems at 1,874 stations. Equipped with advanced video analytics, these systems can automatically detect suspicious activities such as intrusion and loitering, while also incorporating facial recognition capabilities for enhanced monitoring. The move reflects Indian Railways’ growing reliance on artificial intelligence to strengthen security infrastructure.
To support critical railway operations, communication systems have been modernized at 1,396 stations, enabling better coordination within stations and across the network. A key milestone in this effort is the deployment of Internet Protocol Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP MPLS) technology, forming a unified telecom backbone. This high-capacity network supports essential services such as Passenger Reservation System (PRS), Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS), Freight Operations Information System (FOIS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), video conferencing, and other mission-critical applications.
Passenger information systems have also seen major improvements with the expansion of the Integrated Passenger Information System (IPIS). Featuring electronic display boards, coach guidance systems, and public address systems, IPIS ensures passengers receive real-time updates and platform information efficiently.
In challenging terrains, particularly in tunnel sections, Indian Railways is installing advanced Tunnel Communication Systems to ensure uninterrupted radio connectivity between personnel inside tunnels and control rooms. This initiative is especially crucial for projects like the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, where seamless communication is vital for operational safety.
These developments highlight Indian Railways’ commitment to building a modern, technology-driven ecosystem aligned with the vision of Digital India. By integrating AI, robust telecom networks, and real-time passenger information systems, the national transporter is steadily transforming into a smarter, safer, and more efficient railway network, aimed at delivering improved services to millions of passengers across the country.
