Government of India and Manipur Seal Historic Peace Accord with United National Liberation Front (UNLF)

Landmark Agreement Marks a Significant Step Towards Peace in the North East

In a momentous development, the Government of India, in collaboration with the Government of Manipur, has officially inked a historic Peace Agreement with the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), the oldest armed group in the Manipur valley. The signing ceremony took place in New Delhi, signifying a crucial milestone in the quest for lasting peace in the region.

A New Era of Peace for Manipur and the North East

The agreement is poised to herald a new era of peace, not only for Manipur but for the entire North East region. Aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and under the guidance of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, the Government of India has been actively pursuing agreements with various armed groups in the North East since 2014. The overarching goal is to quell militancy and stimulate development in the region.

Valley-Based UNLF Chooses Peaceful Return to Mainstream

For the first time, a valley-based Manipuri armed group, UNLF, has chosen to return to the mainstream by renouncing violence and committing to uphold the Constitution of India and abide by the laws of the land.

Ending Decades-Long Hostilities

The accord not only puts an end to hostilities between UNLF and security forces, which have claimed lives on both sides for over half a century, but also opens a door to address the longstanding concerns of the community.

Paving the Way for Lasting Reconciliation

The return of UNLF to the mainstream is expected to serve as an encouraging precedent, fostering hope for other valley-based armed groups to participate in the peace process in the foreseeable future. The accord reflects a collective commitment to reconciliation, emphasizing the significance of dialogue and cooperation in building a peaceful and prosperous North East.
