Indian Railways Approves ₹238 Crore Safety Upgrade on Jammu–Katra Rail Section
Slope stabilisation, tunnel rehabilitation and bridge protection works sanctioned to strengthen safety and reliability on the strategically important Shri Mata Vaishno Devi route.

Indian Railways has approved critical slope stabilisation, tunnel rehabilitation and bridge protection works worth ₹238 crore on the strategically important Jammu–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra section of Northern Railway. The sanctioned works include slope protection, treatment of tunnel seepage, rehabilitation of vulnerable structures, bridge safety measures and other infrastructure interventions aimed at improving long-term operational safety on the route.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring safe and reliable railway connectivity in some of the country’s most challenging terrains. He stated that the approval followed a detailed assessment of tunnels, bridges and cuttings along the section.
The Jammu–Katra rail route has faced engineering and operational challenges due to difficult geology, steep terrain and extreme weather conditions. Railway officials said the newly sanctioned works will significantly improve the resilience and reliability of the route, which serves millions of pilgrims and passengers travelling to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine every year.
Indian Railways said the protection and rehabilitation measures will help strengthen infrastructure durability and enhance passenger safety on the vital Himalayan rail corridor.
