Chief of the Army Staff, General Manoj Pande, Embarks on Pivotal Visit to Republic of Korea

Visit Aims to Reinforce Robust Defence Ties, Commemorating Historic India-ROK Relations

In a significant diplomatic move, General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), embarked on an official visit to the Republic of Korea (ROK) today. The purpose of the visit is to strengthen the already robust defence ties between India and ROK, marking a pivotal moment in the history of their relations.

Historical Significance:

The visit commences on 20th November, a date laden with historical significance. Exactly 73 years ago, on 20th November 1950, the 60 Para Field Ambulance of the Indian Army landed in Busan during the Korean War, providing critical medical support. This momentous day serves as a backdrop for discussions and interactions during General Manoj Pande’s visit.

Key Highlights of the Visit:

The COAS’s itinerary includes crucial interactions with senior military leadership in ROK, along with visits to defence formations and establishments. Noteworthy events include a bilateral meeting with General Park An-su, Chief of Staff, ROK Army, and a dialogue with General Kim Seung-kyum, Chairman of Joint Chief of Staff of ROK Armed Forces. These engagements are geared towards fostering mutual understanding, discussing the regional security situation, and enhancing bilateral defence cooperation.

Honoring Fallen Heroes:

General Manoj Pande will pay respects to the fallen heroes by visiting the National Cemetery and War Memorial, laying a wreath in their remembrance. A special visit to the Indian Section of the War Memorial is planned, acknowledging the significant role played by Indian soldiers in the Korean War.

Insights into Defence Landscape:

During his visit, the COAS will tour establishments such as Defence Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA), Korean Army Centre for Future and Innovation (KARCFI), and the Agency for Defence Development at Daejeon. Briefings on mutual interests, a visit to a Drone Combat Unit, and a tour of the Border Management and Surveillance Facility are also on the agenda.

Celebrating 50 Years of Diplomatic Ties:

The visit coincides with the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic ties between India and ROK in 2023. It underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen their special strategic partnership. This visit is expected to fortify bilateral cooperation, particularly in the realm of defence collaboration, showcasing the enduring camaraderie between India and ROK.
