RPF Personnel Recover Woman Passenger’s Valuables Worth ₹1.5 Lakh in Varanasi

In a timely intervention reflecting the alertness and passenger-friendly approach of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), personnel in Varanasi recovered a valuable handbag belonging to a woman passenger and returned it to her after verifying her identity and the contents of the bag.

The incident took place on October 3, 2026, within the jurisdiction of the RPF Post Administration, Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi.

During a routine patrol at around 7:20 am, Sub-Inspector Lavkush Prasad and Constable Ajay Kumar Vishwakarma noticed a ladies’ handbag lying unattended on the road in front of the Nathupur Pota Cabin.

Suspecting that the bag might have been accidentally left behind by a passenger or local resident, the RPF personnel immediately secured it and checked for information that could help identify its owner.

Woman Contacted Through Mobile Number

The RPF team found a mobile number inside the handbag and used it to contact the concerned woman. During the conversation, the woman informed the personnel that she had accidentally dropped her handbag at the location.

The woman subsequently reached the BLW/Cantt area, where RPF personnel conducted the necessary verification before handing over the recovered belongings.

Her identity was established and the contents of the handbag were checked against the information provided by her.

Gold Chain and Other Valuables Recovered

According to the RPF, the handbag contained ₹1,390 in cash, a gold chain weighing approximately 12 grams, a pair of silver anklets, Aadhaar cards belonging to family members and other essential belongings.

The estimated total value of the recovered items was approximately ₹1.50 lakh.

The RPF personnel carefully matched the articles with the woman’s claim and completed the necessary identification and verification procedures before returning the belongings.

Following the verification, a formal handover memorandum (supurdginama) was prepared in accordance with the prescribed procedure. The handbag and all its contents were then safely handed over to the woman in the presence of security staff member Nagendra Choubey.

Passenger Expresses Gratitude

The woman expressed her gratitude to the RPF personnel after receiving her belongings intact. She appreciated the prompt response and the sensitive handling of the matter by the security personnel.

The recovery was particularly significant for the woman as it coincided with Jivitputrika (Jitiya) Vrat, an important religious observance. The safe return of the valuables on the occasion brought her additional relief and happiness, according to the railway authorities.

She also expressed her appreciation and confidence in the RPF for helping her recover the valuable belongings without any loss.

RPF Highlights Passenger Assistance

The incident highlights the role of the RPF not only in maintaining security at railway premises but also in assisting passengers in situations involving lost or misplaced belongings.

Routine patrolling by security personnel can help identify unattended articles and prevent them from being lost, stolen or otherwise misused. In this case, the prompt identification of the handbag and the use of the contact information found inside enabled the RPF to trace its owner and facilitate its return.

The railway authorities said that the safety, assistance and welfare of passengers, along with sensitivity and humane service, remain important aspects of the RPF’s responsibilities.

The recovery of valuables estimated at ₹1.50 lakh and their successful return to their owner underscores the importance of alert security personnel and timely passenger assistance at railway premises.

The RPF’s intervention also serves as a reminder to passengers to remain careful with their personal belongings while travelling or moving through railway premises. At the same time, the incident demonstrates how prompt action by railway security personnel can help reunite passengers with valuable items that are accidentally misplaced or left behind.
