Northern Railway Introduces Dedicated Entry and Exit Gates at New Delhi Railway Station for Better Crowd Management
Separate access routes designated for reserved and unreserved passengers; Blue and Yellow colour-coded gates to streamline movement across platforms

Under the revised system, entry and exit gates have been designated separately, with the objective of preventing unnecessary congestion in the station’s circulating areas, concourses, foot overbridges and platforms. The initiative is intended to regulate passenger movement, reduce overcrowding at major access points and make boarding and alighting more convenient.
A key feature of the new arrangement is the introduction of separate access routes for passengers travelling in reserved and unreserved categories. The railway administration has also introduced a colour-coded identification system to help passengers identify their designated gates easily.

Separate Gates for Reserved and Unreserved Passengers
As part of the new arrangements, passengers travelling in reserved classes, including Sleeper and AC coaches, and those travelling in unreserved or general-class coaches will use different entry routes.
The designated gates have been identified through a blue and yellow colour-coding system.
Blue Colour – Reserved Category Passengers:
Passengers holding reserved tickets for trains operating from platforms 1 to 15 will use Gate Nos. 8 and 11. These gates have been designated specifically for passengers travelling in reserved categories, including Sleeper and AC classes.
Yellow Colour – Unreserved Category Passengers:
Passengers travelling in general or unreserved coaches of trains operating from platforms 1 to 16 will use Gate No. 12. This arrangement is intended to separate the movement of unreserved passengers from that of reserved-category travellers.
By dividing passenger movement according to travel categories, Northern Railway aims to reduce congestion at common entry points and prevent overcrowding near platforms, particularly during peak hours and festival periods.
One-Way Movement to Regulate Passenger Flow
Another important feature of the revised arrangement is the introduction of one-way passenger movement at designated entry and exit points.
Under this system, passengers entering the station through designated entry gates will not be permitted to use the same gates for exiting. Similarly, exit gates will be reserved exclusively for passengers leaving the station premises.
The separation of entry and exit routes is expected to minimise the chances of passengers moving in opposite directions at the same location, which often results in congestion and delays.
The railway administration expects this arrangement to improve passenger circulation in the station complex and facilitate smoother movement towards platforms and other station facilities.
Mobile Ticketing Through Hand-Held Devices
To reduce queues at unreserved ticket counters, Northern Railway has also introduced a special mobile ticketing arrangement at the station.
Under this initiative, railway employees equipped with hand-held ticketing devices are approaching passengers directly and issuing unreserved tickets on the spot.
The facility is aimed at reducing dependence on fixed ticket counters and helping passengers obtain tickets without waiting in long queues. It is particularly relevant during the festive season, when a substantial number of passengers travel in general and unreserved coaches.
The mobile ticketing arrangement is expected to improve ticketing convenience and help regulate passenger movement around booking counters.
Temporary Suspension of Platform Ticket Sales
In another measure aimed at controlling unnecessary crowding, the sale of platform tickets has been temporarily suspended at New Delhi Railway Station.
The decision is intended to prioritise entry for passengers holding valid travel tickets and restrict the number of non-travelling visitors entering the station premises.
During periods of heavy passenger movement, the presence of people accompanying travellers can add to congestion on platforms and in circulating areas. The temporary suspension of platform ticket sales is expected to help reduce such additional footfall.
The railway administration is focusing on ensuring that station space remains available primarily for passengers undertaking journeys.
Clear Signboards and Directional Guidance
To ensure that passengers can easily follow the revised arrangements, prominent signboards and directional indicators have been installed throughout the station complex.
These signages have been placed at important locations, including station premises, foot overbridges, entry points and exit points.
The colour-coded guidance system is intended to help passengers identify the correct access routes without confusion. Clear directional information will also assist passengers in reaching their designated platforms and gates more efficiently.
Passengers are advised to check the signboards carefully and follow the instructions displayed at the station to avoid unnecessary movement between different access points.
Special Arrangements for Senior Citizens and Divyang Passengers
While introducing separate entry and exit arrangements, Northern Railway has maintained accessibility facilities for senior citizens, persons with disabilities (Divyang passengers) and travellers requiring special assistance.
Accessible ramps and dedicated routes near the nearest gates will continue to remain available for passengers who require wheelchairs or other mobility assistance.
The railway administration has emphasised the importance of ensuring that crowd-management measures do not create difficulties for passengers with reduced mobility.
Focus on Passenger Safety and Efficient Station Management
The new arrangements at New Delhi Railway Station represent an effort by Northern Railway to improve passenger circulation through better access control, segregation of travel categories and technology-enabled ticketing services.
With the festive season bringing additional passenger traffic, the dedicated entry and exit gates, one-way movement system, mobile ticketing facilities and temporary suspension of platform ticket sales are expected to help manage crowds more effectively.
Passengers are advised to identify their designated gates before arriving at the station, follow the colour-coded signages and cooperate with railway staff to ensure smooth and safe movement throughout the station premises.
