Jaipur–Tatanagar–Santragachi Express Flagged Off to Boost Connectivity Across Five States

New train service to benefit migrant workers, students and business communities; railway infrastructure projects worth ₹75,000 crore underway in Jharkhand

The Jaipur (Khatipura)–Tatanagar–Santragachi Express train was flagged off on Monday by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, marking a significant step towards strengthening rail connectivity between Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw participated in the flag-off programme through video conferencing.

The new train service is expected to improve passenger connectivity between Jaipur, Jamshedpur and Kolkata, providing additional travel options for migrant workers, students, traders, business communities and other passengers travelling across these states. The service is also expected to facilitate access to employment, educational institutions and commercial centres, strengthening economic and social links between eastern and north-western India.

Several public representatives and dignitaries attended the programme, including West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh, Mayor Sunil Kothari, Member of Parliament Bidyut Baran Mahato and Member of Parliament Manju Sharma.

Railway investment in Jharkhand increases significantly

Addressing the programme, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the expansion of railway infrastructure in Jharkhand, stating that the state’s railway budget allocation had increased from ₹450 crore to ₹7,500 crore. This represents an increase of approximately 16 times compared with the earlier allocation.

He said railway projects worth around ₹75,000 crore were currently underway in the state, reflecting the scale of investment being directed towards railway infrastructure development, capacity enhancement and passenger facilities.

The minister also highlighted the redevelopment of 57 railway stations in Jharkhand under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. According to him, work has been completed at several stations, including Godda, Govindpur Road, Lohardaga, Madhupur and Muri.

The station redevelopment initiative aims to improve passenger amenities, upgrade station infrastructure and create more convenient travel facilities. Such improvements are particularly important for smaller cities and towns, where railway stations serve as key gateways for passengers travelling for work, education, healthcare and business.

More than 1,300 stations being redeveloped nationwide

Vaishnaw said railway station redevelopment was being undertaken across the country under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with more than 1,300 stations taken up for development.

In West Bengal, redevelopment work is underway at several stations, including Santragachi, Jalpaiguri Road, Joychandi Pahar, Haldia and Kamakhyaguri.

The minister emphasised that railway development was being planned with the needs of middle-class and economically weaker families in mind. He noted that Indian Railways remains an important and affordable mode of transport for millions of people, making improvements in connectivity and station facilities particularly significant.

Enhanced passenger amenities and better railway infrastructure are expected to improve the overall travel experience while supporting mobility across urban centres, industrial regions and smaller towns.

Four-line expansion on Howrah–Tatanagar route

Highlighting ongoing infrastructure projects in West Bengal, the Railway Minister said work was underway to expand the railway corridor connecting Howrah, Kharagpur, Chakulia and Tatanagar to four lines.

The expansion is aimed at strengthening railway capacity along this important corridor, which connects major passenger destinations and industrial centres in West Bengal and Jharkhand. Additional railway lines can help accommodate growing traffic and improve operational flexibility, subject to the completion and commissioning of the relevant sections.

Vaishnaw also announced that work on a 4.5-kilometre section connected to the Beleghata–IT Centre section of Kolkata Metro had been completed and trial runs had commenced. He said the section would provide connectivity with the Metro’s Green Line.

The development is expected to support the expansion of urban rail connectivity in Kolkata and improve integration between different parts of the city’s transport network.

West Bengal’s railway budget allocation rises to ₹14,205 crore

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed gratitude to the Railway Minister for the railway infrastructure projects being undertaken in the state. He highlighted the increase in railway budget allocation, describing it as an important step towards improving connectivity and strengthening infrastructure.

According to Adhikari, the annual average railway budget allocation for West Bengal during 2009–2014 stood at ₹4,380 crore. This has increased to ₹14,205 crore for the financial year 2026–27.

The increased allocation is expected to support railway infrastructure development, capacity expansion, station redevelopment and improvements in passenger services across the state.

Improved connectivity to support regional development

The launch of the Jaipur–Tatanagar–Santragachi Express adds another rail link connecting important destinations across five states. By facilitating travel between Rajasthan and eastern India, the service is expected to benefit workers, students, traders and families while improving access to major employment and commercial centres.

Combined with ongoing investments in station redevelopment, railway line expansion and urban transit connectivity, the new service reflects continuing efforts to strengthen India’s railway network.

Improved rail connectivity can contribute to regional economic development by facilitating passenger movement, supporting business activity and making travel more accessible. The benefits will depend on effective service operations, passenger demand and the timely completion of supporting infrastructure projects.
