Indian Railways Approves ₹993 Crore Arakkonam–Chengalpattu Doubling Project
New 68-km double line to ease congestion on Chennai suburban network, improve passenger services and boost freight movement for industries and upcoming Parandur Airport connectivity.

Indian Railways has approved the 68-km Arakkonam–Chengalpattu Doubling Project of Southern Railway at an estimated cost of ₹993 crore, aiming to strengthen the Chennai suburban rail network and improve both passenger and freight operations in Tamil Nadu. The project forms a crucial part of the Chennai suburban circular rail corridor connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Arakkonam.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the doubling project will significantly ease congestion on one of the busiest suburban rail corridors in South India. He stated that the additional line infrastructure will improve punctuality, enhance operational efficiency and support the growing transportation needs of both commuters and industries.
According to railway officials, the existing single-line section between Arakkonam and Chengalpattu is currently operating at a very high level of capacity utilisation. With suburban passenger traffic and freight demand expected to increase substantially in the coming years, infrastructure augmentation had become essential to ensure smooth train movement across the corridor.
The doubling work is expected to reduce detention time of trains, improve scheduling flexibility and increase the frequency of suburban rail services. Officials said the project will help Indian Railways operate more trains efficiently while reducing congestion-related delays on the route.
The Arakkonam–Chengalpattu corridor is strategically important for both passenger movement and industrial freight transportation. The route passes through several major industrial and manufacturing hubs, including Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, Irungattukottai and Mahindra World City. These regions host automobile manufacturing plants, logistics centres, electronics industries and heavy engineering units, making the corridor a vital economic link for Tamil Nadu.
Railway officials said the doubling project will support smoother transportation of key commodities such as cement, automobiles, food grains, iron and steel. Freight movement on the corridor is expected to increase further due to rapid industrial expansion and growing logistics demand in the Chennai region.
The upcoming Parandur Airport project near Kancheepuram has also added to the strategic importance of the route. Officials believe the rail infrastructure upgrade will play an important role in supporting future connectivity needs linked to the proposed airport and surrounding industrial development.
Indian Railways stated that the project forms part of its larger effort to modernise railway infrastructure, increase line capacity and improve operational efficiency across high-demand corridors. Over the past few years, the national transporter has undertaken several major projects involving line doubling, electrification, station redevelopment and freight corridor expansion to accommodate rising passenger and freight traffic.
The Chennai suburban rail network is among the busiest suburban systems in India, carrying lakhs of passengers daily. Railway authorities said strengthening infrastructure on key suburban routes is essential to improving commuter convenience and ensuring reliable transportation services in the rapidly growing Chennai metropolitan region.
The Arakkonam–Chengalpattu Doubling Project is expected to deliver long-term operational benefits by increasing carrying capacity and reducing bottlenecks on the network. Officials added that the project will help improve service reliability, reduce delays and support faster movement of both suburban and long-distance trains operating through the corridor.
In addition to enhancing passenger connectivity, the project is expected to provide a major boost to regional economic growth by improving logistics efficiency and strengthening connectivity between industrial clusters and ports. Better freight mobility is likely to benefit manufacturers, exporters and supply chains operating across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions.
Railway officials believe the doubling project will play a significant role in transforming suburban and industrial rail connectivity in the Chennai region while supporting future transportation demand. Once completed, the project is expected to provide faster, safer and more reliable rail services for passengers and freight operators alike.
