Indian Railways Approves ₹233 Crore for Electronic Interlocking at 21 Samastipur Division Stations

Indian Railways has approved an investment of ₹233 crore for installing Electronic Interlocking (EI) systems at 21 stations in Samastipur Division of East Central Railway (ECR), marking another major step towards modernising railway signalling and strengthening train safety infrastructure.

The project will replace the existing Panel Interlocking systems with modern Electronic Interlocking at the identified stations. The upgrade is also expected to facilitate the implementation of Kavach, Indian Railways’ indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.

The move is part of the Railways’ broader programme to modernise signalling infrastructure and introduce advanced technologies designed to improve the reliability, safety and efficiency of train operations.

Existing Signalling Systems to Be Replaced

Under the approved project, Panel Interlocking installations at 21 stations of Samastipur Division will be replaced with computer-based Electronic Interlocking systems.

Interlocking is a critical component of railway signalling. It ensures that signals and points are operated in a manner that prevents conflicting train movements and helps maintain safe routes for trains.

Electronic Interlocking uses computer-based technology to control signalling and point operations, replacing older systems that rely on conventional relay or panel-based arrangements.

The upgrade will provide the identified stations with a more advanced signalling architecture capable of supporting modern train protection technologies.

Supporting Kavach Implementation

One of the key objectives of the project is to create the signalling infrastructure required to support the implementation of Kavach, the indigenous Automatic Train Protection system being deployed across the Indian Railways network.

Kavach is designed to provide an additional layer of protection during train operations. It can help prevent Signal Passing At Danger (SPAD), control train speed in critical situations and automatically apply brakes when required under defined safety conditions.

Modernising station signalling through Electronic Interlocking will therefore provide an important technological foundation for integrating Kavach with railway operations.

The combination of advanced interlocking and automatic train protection is expected to strengthen safety arrangements across the Samastipur Division.

Improving Reliability and Maintenance
