Indian Railways Approves ₹233 Crore for Electronic Interlocking at 21 Samastipur Division Stations

Indian Railways has approved an investment of ₹233 crore for installing Electronic Interlocking (EI) systems at 21 stations in Samastipur Division of East Central Railway (ECR), marking another major step towards modernising railway signalling and strengthening train safety infrastructure.
The project will replace the existing Panel Interlocking systems with modern Electronic Interlocking at the identified stations. The upgrade is also expected to facilitate the implementation of Kavach, Indian Railways’ indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.
The move is part of the Railways’ broader programme to modernise signalling infrastructure and introduce advanced technologies designed to improve the reliability, safety and efficiency of train operations.
Existing Signalling Systems to Be Replaced
Under the approved project, Panel Interlocking installations at 21 stations of Samastipur Division will be replaced with computer-based Electronic Interlocking systems.
Interlocking is a critical component of railway signalling. It ensures that signals and points are operated in a manner that prevents conflicting train movements and helps maintain safe routes for trains.
Electronic Interlocking uses computer-based technology to control signalling and point operations, replacing older systems that rely on conventional relay or panel-based arrangements.
The upgrade will provide the identified stations with a more advanced signalling architecture capable of supporting modern train protection technologies.
Supporting Kavach Implementation
One of the key objectives of the project is to create the signalling infrastructure required to support the implementation of Kavach, the indigenous Automatic Train Protection system being deployed across the Indian Railways network.
Kavach is designed to provide an additional layer of protection during train operations. It can help prevent Signal Passing At Danger (SPAD), control train speed in critical situations and automatically apply brakes when required under defined safety conditions.
Modernising station signalling through Electronic Interlocking will therefore provide an important technological foundation for integrating Kavach with railway operations.
The combination of advanced interlocking and automatic train protection is expected to strengthen safety arrangements across the Samastipur Division.
Improving Reliability and Maintenance
Electronic Interlocking systems offer several operational advantages over conventional signalling arrangements.
Because the system is computer-based, faults can be identified and diagnosed more efficiently, potentially reducing the time required to restore signalling operations. Modern EI systems can also offer greater flexibility in route setting and signalling management.
The technology is designed to provide higher reliability while simplifying maintenance and enabling railway personnel to monitor and manage signalling functions more effectively.
For a busy railway division handling both passenger and freight operations, improvements in signalling reliability can contribute to smoother train movement and reduced operational disruptions.
Strengthening Railway Safety
The ₹233-crore project forms part of Indian Railways’ continuing efforts to replace older signalling infrastructure with modern systems.
Signalling plays a fundamental role in railway safety by controlling train movements, managing routes and ensuring that conflicting movements are prevented. Upgrading signalling systems is therefore an important component of the Railways’ strategy to improve operational safety.
The replacement of Panel Interlocking with Electronic Interlocking at 21 stations will bring the selected locations in Samastipur Division closer to modern signalling standards.
The project will also help create a stronger technological ecosystem for future railway safety initiatives, including the wider deployment of Kavach.
Samastipur Division Gets Major Technology Upgrade
The approval represents a substantial investment in signalling infrastructure in Samastipur Division of East Central Railway.
With ₹233 crore allocated for EI systems at 21 stations, the project will modernise signalling arrangements while improving the division’s preparedness for advanced train protection technology.
The initiative is expected to deliver benefits in three key areas: railway safety, operational efficiency and signalling reliability.
As Indian Railways continues its transition towards computer-based signalling and automated train protection, projects such as this are becoming increasingly important for upgrading infrastructure across the network.
The Electronic Interlocking installations will provide modern, reliable and flexible signalling capabilities at the selected stations and support the future integration of Kavach.
The project is consequently another significant step in Indian Railways’ ongoing modernisation programme, aimed at creating a safer, more technologically advanced and efficient railway network.
