Indian Railways Approves ₹170 Crore for Kavach 4.0 on 712 Rkm of Moradabad Division

Indian Railways has approved an investment of ₹170 crore for the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 across the remaining 712 Route Kilometres (Rkm) of Moradabad Division under Northern Railway, giving a major boost to railway safety and train protection infrastructure in the division.

The approved project will expand the coverage of the indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system across sections that are yet to be equipped with the technology. The deployment is aimed at providing an additional layer of safety for train operations while modernising signalling and train protection infrastructure.

Kavach is designed to work alongside existing railway signalling systems and assist loco pilots in maintaining safe train operations, particularly during situations where human intervention may not be sufficient to prevent an accident.

Kavach 4.0 to Strengthen Train Safety

The latest approval covers the remaining 712 Rkm of Moradabad Division, ensuring that a larger portion of the division’s railway network can benefit from advanced train protection technology.

Kavach is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system developed for Indian Railways. It is designed to reduce the possibility of accidents caused by trains passing signals at danger, excessive speed and other unsafe operating conditions.

One of its key functions is preventing Signal Passing At Danger (SPAD), a situation in which a train passes a signal displaying a stop indication.

When required, the system can automatically apply the train’s brakes if the prescribed safety conditions are breached. It can also assist in controlling train speed in critical situations, thereby reducing the risk of collisions and other operational incidents.

The technology is intended to provide an additional safety layer rather than replace the role of the loco pilot.

Expanding Indigenous Railway Safety Technology

The ₹170-crore approval is part of Indian Railways’ wider programme to expand Kavach coverage across the national railway network.

Indian Railways has been progressively deploying the indigenous ATP system on important routes and high-density railway sections. The objective is to strengthen train protection capabilities while upgrading signalling systems and improving operational safety.

The introduction of Kavach 4.0 represents the next phase of this effort, with the latest version designed to provide more advanced capabilities and broader operational support.

₹170 Crore Investment in Moradabad Division

Under the newly approved project, 712 Route Kilometres of railway track in Moradabad Division will be covered by Kavach 4.0 at a total estimated cost of ₹170 crore.

The investment will strengthen the technological backbone supporting train operations in the division and help bring the remaining uncovered sections under the advanced protection system.

The project also reflects Indian Railways’ increasing focus on indigenous technologies for improving railway safety. Developed specifically for Indian railway operating conditions, Kavach is being expanded as part of the national effort to modernise train control and signalling infrastructure.
