Railways Sourcing Week Begins, Highlights Digital Vendor Onboarding and Future Procurement Opportunities

The sixth edition of Indian Railways Sourcing Week commenced on Wednesday, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, exporters, and engineering manufacturers on a common platform to explore emerging opportunities in India’s rapidly expanding railway sector. Organized by EEPC India, the three-day event aims to strengthen collaboration between Indian Railways and the engineering industry while focusing on vendor development, digital procurement, technology transfer, and future sourcing requirements.

Addressing the inaugural session, Vimal Anand, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said that the ongoing modernization of Indian Railways presents a significant opportunity for engineering goods manufacturers, particularly Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), to establish themselves as competitive suppliers in the global railway equipment market.

He emphasized that becoming an approved vendor for Indian Railways demonstrates compliance with international quality standards and prepares companies to serve global customers. According to Anand, mastering domestic procurement requirements enables Indian MSMEs to develop the technical expertise and operational capabilities necessary for integration into international engineering supply chains.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting MSMEs, Anand said that India is focused on ensuring small businesses evolve beyond subcontracting roles to become innovators and technology leaders. He pointed out that under the Public Procurement Policy for Micro and Small Enterprises, Central Ministries, Departments, and Public Sector Undertakings are mandated to source at least 25 percent of their annual procurement requirements from MSEs. The policy also includes dedicated sub-targets for enterprises owned by women and members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Anand further noted that the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has played a transformative role in making public procurement more transparent and accessible. He said the digital platform has democratized vendor development by enabling engineering units located in tier-2 and tier-3 cities to compete directly for large government contracts without relying on traditional intermediaries.

He added that as Indian Railways advances into high-speed rail corridors, bullet train projects, regional rapid transit systems, and modern metro networks, the demand for advanced technologies and sophisticated engineering solutions will continue to rise. This evolution, he said, will create substantial opportunities for domestic manufacturers capable of meeting higher technological standards.

Welcoming participants, EEPC India Chairman Pankaj Chadha highlighted the remarkable growth of India’s railway manufacturing ecosystem. He stated that with a production pipeline exceeding 1,500 advanced electric locomotives annually, thousands of modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, and an ambitious wagon procurement programme aimed at supporting a 3,000 million tonne loading target, India has emerged as a major global hub for rail manufacturing.

Chadha said the transformation of the railway supply chain offers unprecedented opportunities for engineering exporters and MSMEs. What was once primarily a domestic market, he noted, has evolved into an international platform for high-quality engineering products and railway components.

He pointed out that Indian MSMEs are increasingly expanding their presence in overseas markets through exports of rolling stock, railway equipment, and components to countries across Asia, Africa, and other regions. This trend positions Indian vendors to become Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers for global railway manufacturers and operators.

Chadha also welcomed the recent launch of the RailTech Policy and dedicated portal, describing them as important initiatives that provide MSMEs and engineering startups with a structured pathway to collaborate on advanced railway technologies. The initiatives are expected to encourage innovation, support localized component development, and reduce barriers to market entry.

During the three-day event, participants will engage in a series of focused sessions covering decentralized and digital vendor onboarding, import substitution strategies, advanced material sourcing, technology transfer mechanisms, procurement roadmaps from railway production units, and upcoming government infrastructure projects.

The inaugural session was attended by EEPC India Vice Chairman Aakash Shah and Executive Director Adhip Mitra, among other industry representatives.

The event concluded its opening session with a vote of thanks by Raman Raghu, Regional Chairman (Southern Region), EEPC India. He encouraged active participation from the engineering community and emphasized that the discussions and technical sessions scheduled over the next three days would provide valuable insights into vendor development opportunities and future procurement plans within the Indian Railways ecosystem.
