Trial Run Conducted on Newly Electrified JNPT–Vaitarna Section, Marks Completion of Western Freight Corridor

In a major milestone for India’s freight transportation network, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) has successfully conducted a trial run on the newly electrified double-line section between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) and Vaitarna. The trial was carried out under the leadership and guidance of the Managing Director of DFCCIL, marking a significant step towards operationalising high-capacity freight infrastructure in the country.

The trial run assumes added importance as it signifies the completion of the entire Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) as of March 31, 2026. With this, seamless end-to-end connectivity has now been established across one of India’s most critical freight corridors, aimed at transforming logistics efficiency and boosting economic growth.

The event witnessed the presence of several senior officials from DFCCIL, including Shobhit Bhatnagar, Director (Operations & Business Development); Anurag Sharma, Director (Infrastructure); M.K. Awasthy, Executive Director (Infrastructure); Sandesh Srivastava, Executive Director (Projects); along with other key officers and technical teams. Their participation underscored the collaborative effort behind the successful execution of the project.

During the trial, freight trains were operated in both directions simultaneously to assess real-time performance. A container train in the down direction, from JNPT to New Saphale (Vaitarna), departed at 11:50 AM, hauled by an electric locomotive. At the same time, another container train in the up direction, from New Saphale to JNPT, was operated using a diesel locomotive. This dual-mode testing ensured a comprehensive evaluation of operational readiness across different traction systems.

The trial run was designed to rigorously test various technical and operational parameters. These included track stability, the behaviour of long welded rails under heavy loads, and the efficiency of overhead electrification systems. Additionally, locomotive performance, signalling coordination, and the safe movement of rolling stock were closely monitored. The exercise also assessed the integration of mainline and loop line operations, a critical factor for ensuring smooth and uninterrupted freight movement.

Officials highlighted that the successful trial demonstrates the corridor’s readiness for full-scale operations. The electrified section is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of freight movement by reducing dependency on diesel locomotives and lowering operational costs.

One of the key advantages of the newly completed corridor is the substantial improvement in operational efficiency. With uninterrupted connectivity now in place, freight trains will require fewer crew changes during transit. For instance, between New Makarpura and New JNPT, operations can now be managed with a single crew set instead of three, owing to reduced halts and streamlined processes.

Moreover, the transit time for freight trains is expected to reduce by nearly four hours. This reduction will not only accelerate cargo movement but also improve turnaround times for rolling stock. Faster turnaround translates into better asset utilisation, increased frequency of train operations, and the ability to handle higher volumes of freight traffic.

The completion of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is expected to bring wide-ranging benefits to the logistics sector. It will enhance schedule reliability, reduce congestion on existing railway lines, and provide a dedicated pathway for freight trains, thereby improving overall network efficiency. Industries relying on bulk transportation, such as manufacturing, agriculture, and export-oriented sectors, are likely to benefit significantly from the improved logistics framework.

With this development, India takes a significant step forward in modernising its rail freight infrastructure. The operationalisation of the WDFC is expected to play a crucial role in reducing logistics costs, improving supply chain efficiency, and supporting the country’s ambition of becoming a global manufacturing and export hub.
