Major Rail Boost for Jammu & Kashmir: Vande Bharat Extended to Jammu Tawi

In a major step towards strengthening rail connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir, Northern Railway has extended the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express services up to Jammu Tawi railway station. The extension, effective from March 1, 2026, fulfills a long-standing public demand and significantly enhances seamless travel between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.

With this development, passengers will now be able to travel between Jammu and Srinagar in less than five hours, marking a substantial reduction in travel time compared to road journeys along the frequently disrupted Jammu–Srinagar National Highway.

The Vande Bharat service was earlier operating between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station and Srinagar railway station. The extension to Jammu ensures direct connectivity between the winter capital and the Kashmir Valley through a modern semi high-speed train.

Faster, Safer and All-Weather Connectivity

The extension provides a reliable alternative to road travel, which is often affected by landslides, heavy snowfall, and adverse weather conditions. The Jammu–Srinagar highway frequently experiences disruptions, particularly during winter months. The Vande Bharat service offers an all-weather, punctual, and comfortable mode of transport.

The semi high-speed trains are equipped with modern passenger amenities, enhanced safety systems, improved suspension, and superior ride comfort. The service is expected to benefit daily commuters, students, traders, pilgrims, and tourists visiting the region.

Background: USBRL Project Milestone

The historic Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link project was dedicated to the nation on June 6, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following its completion, residents and stakeholders consistently demanded direct semi high-speed rail connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar.

The extension of the Vande Bharat service marks a significant milestone in fulfilling those aspirations.

Boost to Tourism and Economy

The improved rail connectivity is expected to:

  • Promote tourism in Jammu and the Kashmir Valley
  • Facilitate smoother movement of goods and traders
  • Enhance access for students and working professionals
  • Strengthen regional economic integration
  • Support socio-economic development in Jammu & Kashmir

This move reflects the continued commitment of the Government of India and Indian Railways toward expanding infrastructure and delivering modern transport solutions to the people of the region.

With the extension now in place, Jammu and Srinagar are connected faster and more efficiently than ever before, ushering in a new era of rail travel in Jammu & Kashmir.
