Namo Bharat Depot and Metro Station in Modipuram Witness Rapid Construction Progress
Meerut, July 3:
The construction of the second Namo Bharat depot in Modipuram, near the University of Agriculture and Technology, is progressing at a brisk pace, as part of the broader Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor. Developed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), this depot is set to play a vital role in operations and maintenance as the full stretch of the Namo Bharat corridor becomes operational.
In addition to the depot, a dedicated Meerut Metro station is also under construction in the same area. The station is expected to significantly improve last-mile connectivity for surrounding areas such as Pawli Khas, Daurala, Sakauti, and Powersa village. The station’s roofing and structural work are advancing rapidly.
Currently, Namo Bharat trains are operated from the existing depot at Duhai, Ghaziabad. However, with the upcoming full-scale operation of the corridor, the Modipuram depot will serve as a crucial support centre, equipped with extensive infrastructure. This includes a Depot Control Centre (DCC) to oversee train operations, a train workshop for maintenance of both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro trains, and stabling lines capable of accommodating up to 34 trainsets.
The depot will also feature:
-
A 1.2 km-long test track for pre-service train trials.
-
Four inspection bay lines (IBLs) for dynamic and static testing.
-
Four workshop lines for repairs and maintenance.
-
A heavy internal cleaning line for detailed train sanitation.
-
An automatic coach washing plant for external cleaning.
-
A heavy-cleaning shed for deep-cleaning and scheduled servicing.
-
An Inspection Work Shop (IWS) and Permanent Way Office for track-related upkeep.
-
A Depot Scrap Yard for maintenance logistics.
The adjacent Meerut Metro station at Modipuram is an at-grade station with two entry/exit points. A Foot Over Bridge (FOB) is also under development on the university side to ensure safe pedestrian access.
This station is part of a 13-station network planned under the Meerut Metro project, which is unique in that it shares infrastructure with Namo Bharat. These stations include:
-
Meerut South, Partapur, Rithani, Shatabdi Nagar, Brahmapuri, Meerut Central, Bhainsali, Begumpul, MES Colony, Daurli, Meerut North, Modipuram, and Modipuram Depot.
Out of these, stations like Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram will offer dual services for both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro, while others will cater exclusively to metro trains.
Once complete, the Modipuram facility will be key to enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and connectivity of urban transit in the region.
