Mumbai-Ahmedabad Rail Route Ready for 160 km/h Speed by Mid-2025, Says Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail corridor has made significant strides in its modernization, with the complete installation of fencing and nearly finished Kavach (Train Collision Avoidance System) systems. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the route is on track to be operational at speeds of up to 160 km/h by the first half of next year, marking a major milestone for Indian Railways.
In a recent update, Vaishnaw highlighted the extensive technological upgrades underway along the route. “RFID tags have been installed at various locations along the track to enhance monitoring and safety, while Kavach system equipment is being fitted along the trackside and inside trains,” he said. The Kavach system, an advanced train protection and collision avoidance technology, is being implemented as part of the safety upgrade for faster trains.
The rail minister also noted that significant work is being done at the stations, with telecom towers similar to those of BSNL being set up to provide seamless connectivity for the Kavach system. “The installation is progressing rapidly, with more than 70-90% reduction in instances of cattle and wildlife intrusion on tracks, thanks to the innovative fencing solutions,” he added. In certain areas, measures have been taken to remove sharp curves, further improving the safety and speed of the trains.
Minister Vaishnaw expressed confidence that the 160 km/h speed operation between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will begin within the next 5-6 months, significantly enhancing travel time. He also mentioned that the upgraded rail corridor will benefit passengers traveling from Delhi, as better connectivity and faster trains will create a more efficient travel network across the region.
