IMD Issues Weather Warnings for Tamil Nadu and Kerala as Heavy Rainfall Approaches
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, including Mahe, on November 1, 2024. Following this significant weather event, a gradual decrease in rainfall is expected in the days to follow.
The latest forecast indicates that a cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar will contribute to the inclement weather, with light to moderate rain anticipated at various locations throughout Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Karnataka, and Kerala between November 1 and 3. While isolated heavy rainfall is expected particularly in Tamil Nadu and Kerala on November 1, coastal areas of Karnataka are also forecasted to experience significant precipitation.
Over the past 24 hours leading up to 8:30 AM IST today, heavy rainfall was recorded in several regions, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where Kil Kotagiri Estate in The Nilgiris district received an impressive 11 cm of rain. Other areas like Vint Worth Estate and Mettupalayam recorded 10 cm and 9 cm respectively. Similar conditions were observed in parts of Kerala and coastal Karnataka, contributing to widespread waterlogging and potential flooding in urban areas.
Temperature Trends
In addition to the rainfall forecasts, the IMD has noted a gradual fall in both maximum and minimum temperatures across North and East India, expected to decrease by 2-3°C between November 3 and 7. Currently, maximum temperatures in parts of Northwest India remain above normal by 2-6°C, with minimum temperatures similarly elevated by 2-5°C in various regions.
Weather Outlook for Delhi/NCR
In the National Capital Region, weather conditions are primarily clear, with temperatures ranging between 32-34°C during the day and 15-20°C at night, which is slightly above the seasonal average. The forecast for Delhi from November 1 to 4 indicates mostly clear skies, although smog and mist are likely to develop during the night and early morning hours. Winds are expected to shift direction, gradually increasing in speed over the coming days.
Impact and Precautions
The IMD warns that the heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and potential disruption of traffic, especially in urban centers. Residents are advised to exercise caution, avoid travel in areas prone to waterlogging, and adhere to any traffic advisories issued by local authorities. Minor damage to infrastructure, such as kutcha roads, and risks of landslides in hilly regions have also been highlighted as potential impacts of the upcoming rainfall.
In light of these forecasts, agricultural advisories have been issued, urging farmers in affected regions to drain excess water from paddy fields and other crops to prevent damage. Support measures for vulnerable crops, especially sugarcane and bananas, are also recommended to mitigate the risks associated with high winds and heavy rain.
