Indian Railways Takes Proactive Measures Ahead of Cyclone ‘Dana’

In response to the impending impact of Cyclone ‘Dana,’ Indian Railways is implementing urgent measures to ensure passenger safety and restore infrastructure. A high-level meeting led by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was convened to review preparations across relevant zonal railways, specifically East Coast Railway and South Eastern Railway.

With a red alert issued for the eastern coast, the Railway Ministry is establishing nine dedicated war rooms in key locations across two states to facilitate the rapid restoration of rail services. The war rooms, operational around the clock, will be staffed by officials from engineering, signaling, operations, and commercial departments to enable swift decision-making in the event of disruptions.

Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the need for “maximum preparation with minimal disruption” and highlighted the importance of ensuring passenger comfort during the cyclone. He noted that all necessary arrangements, including food and water, have been made at major stations to mitigate the effects of strong winds.

To enhance response capabilities, Indian Railways has positioned over 600 personnel and relief materials at various strategic locations, including critical stations like Soro, Jaleswar, and Adra. Emergency teams are prepared for the quick restoration of tracks, signaling systems, and electrification as needed. Diesel engines are on standby to maintain train operations in the event of power outages.

Additionally, the Railway is maintaining constant communication with the meteorological department to receive real-time updates and mobilize resources accordingly. Special attention is being given to the Bhubaneswar-Visakhapatnam corridor, where monitoring is intensified due to the cyclone alert.

In preparation for potential flooding and heavy rainfall, drainage channels and embankments are being cleared of debris, and standby vehicles are organized for passenger evacuation if required.

As part of safety protocols, large hoardings and billboards will be removed from circulation areas of major stations. Track patrols to continue until October 25, with adjustments made as necessary based on weather conditions.

Train services may be regulated or suspended based on wind speed, with some routes already altered or canceled to ensure passenger safety. Travelers are advised to monitor official Railway channels for updates.

Help desks will be established at key stations including Puri, Khurda Road, and Bhubaneswar to assist passengers, while medical teams equipped with necessary supplies are on standby in various locations to address any emergencies.

Indian Railways remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers during Cyclone ‘Dana,’ taking every precaution to minimize disruption and ensure swift recovery operations.
