Government Launches Comprehensive Rescue Operation for Trapped Labourers in Silkyara Tunnel

In a decisive move, the government has initiated an all-out effort to rescue the precious lives of laborers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel. A high-level meeting held today meticulously examined various options based on technical advice, leading to the identification of five key strategies to be pursued. Additionally, the deployment of extra pipes for redundant food support is underway.

Assigning specific responsibilities, NHIDCL, ONGC, SJVNL, THDC & RVNL have each been designated one rescue option. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the construction wing of the Indian Army are actively contributing to the rescue operation.

To streamline coordination with central agencies, Mahmood Ahmed, MD of NHIDCL, has been appointed as the in-charge and stationed in Silkyara. Dr. Neeraj Khairwal, Secretary of the Government of Uttarakhand, is designated as the Nodal Officer for coordination. Senior officers from all relevant agencies are stationed at the site to ensure effective execution.

Following the incident on November 12, 2023, both the State Government and the Government of India swiftly mobilized resources. Officials from NDRF, SDRF, NHIDCL, RVNL, SJVNL, and the State Government reached the site promptly. The initial approach involved laying a pipe through the debris, considered the most viable and expedient solution as per expert advice. However, after the initial attempt using the Auger machine from UK Jal Nigam, it was determined that a larger American Auger Machine was necessary. This machine was airlifted from Delhi with the assistance of the Air Force, and another Auger Machine was also airlifted from Indore.

On November 17, 2023, due to a perceived earth movement and sensor indications, it was deemed unsafe to proceed with this option without securing the structure. Prioritizing the safety of those involved, the government opted to pursue multiple strategies simultaneously to expedite the rescue operation and ensure the earliest possible retrieval of the trapped workers.
