IMD Forecasts Cyclone Midhili Formation Over Bay of Bengal: Alert Issued for Coastal Regions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about the development of Cyclone Midhili over the Bay of Bengal. The depression, which intensified into a deep depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal, is currently centered near latitude 16.9°N and longitude 86.8°E, approximately 380 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh).

As of 0530 hours IST on November 16th, the deep depression is moving north-northeastwards at a speed of 18 kmph. The forecast predicts further intensification as it approaches the Bangladesh coast, with an expected landfall between Mongla and Khepupara on the morning of November 18th, 2023. The cyclonic storm is anticipated to bring wind speeds of 55-65 kmph, gusting up to 75 kmph.

The IMD has provided a detailed forecast track and intensity schedule, indicating the evolution of Cyclone Midhili over the coming days. The system is expected to undergo various stages, from a deep depression to a cyclonic storm and subsequently reverting to a depression.

Warnings Issued:

  • Rainfall Warning: Coastal districts of West Bengal and north Odisha may experience light to moderate rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall on November 16th and 17th. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, south Assam, and east Meghalaya are also expected to receive rainfall during November 16th to 18th.
  • Wind Warning: Various wind warnings are issued for different regions, ranging from squally weather along Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts to squally wind speeds over Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh.
  • Sea Condition: Rough to very rough sea conditions are expected in multiple regions, posing risks to fishermen and coastal inhabitants.
  • Fishermen Warning: Fishermen are strongly advised not to venture into specified regions of the Bay of Bengal during the indicated periods.
  • Damage Expected & Action Suggested: Coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal may experience minor damage, including loose structures, Kutcha road breaches, and partial damage to standing crops. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions.
