Indian Railways Approves ₹285 Crore Electric Traction Upgrade on Key South Central Railway Route

In a major boost to railway infrastructure and capacity enhancement, Indian Railways has sanctioned a significant project to upgrade the electric traction system on the Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal section of South Central Railway. The project, estimated at a cost of ₹285.01 crore, will involve the conversion of the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to the more advanced and efficient 2×25 kV electric traction system across an approximately 141-route-kilometre stretch.

The initiative forms part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to modernize critical rail corridors and strengthen operational efficiency on high-density routes across the country. Railway officials said the upgraded traction system will provide a more stable and reliable power supply, enabling smoother train operations and supporting the growing demand for both passenger and freight transportation.

The Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal section is a crucial segment of the Dharmavaram–Dhone–Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal–Mudkhed–Indore–Ajmer rail corridor, one of the country’s important High-Density Network (HDN) routes. This corridor handles substantial passenger traffic while also serving as a vital freight artery connecting key industrial and commercial centres.

According to Indian Railways, the shift to the 2×25 kV electric traction system is expected to significantly improve the performance of train operations. The advanced system is designed to meet the increasing power requirements of modern rail traffic and can support the movement of heavier freight trains and faster passenger services with greater efficiency.

Railway experts note that the 2×25 kV traction technology offers several operational advantages over the conventional 1×25 kV system. It reduces voltage drops over long distances, enhances energy efficiency, and allows for higher train throughput. These improvements are particularly important on heavily utilized routes where increasing traffic density can place substantial demands on the existing electrical infrastructure.

The sanctioned project is expected to strengthen the carrying capacity of the Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal section, facilitating smoother movement of trains and reducing operational constraints. Enhanced power availability will also help improve punctuality and operational reliability, benefiting both passengers and freight customers.

For the freight sector, the upgrade is expected to deliver substantial gains. Improved traction infrastructure will enable more efficient movement of goods trains, increasing hauling capacity and potentially reducing transit times. This, in turn, is likely to support industrial growth, trade, and logistics activities across the regions connected by the corridor.

The project aligns with Indian Railways’ long-term vision of building a modern, technology-driven, and future-ready transportation network capable of meeting the nation’s growing mobility and freight requirements. Over the past several years, the national transporter has undertaken extensive electrification, capacity augmentation, and infrastructure modernization projects aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability.

Officials believe that strengthening traction systems on high-density routes is critical for accommodating future traffic growth and ensuring seamless rail operations. As freight movement continues to expand and passenger demand rises, advanced electrical infrastructure will play a key role in maintaining network efficiency.

Once completed, the Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal traction upgrade is expected to deliver long-term benefits through increased line capacity, enhanced reliability, improved energy efficiency, and better service quality. The project is also anticipated to contribute to regional economic development by facilitating faster and more efficient transportation of goods and passengers.
