Indian Railways Announces Special Trains and Operational Measures for PET Exam 2026 in Prayagraj Division

The North Central Railway’s Prayagraj Division has prepared an extensive operational plan to manage the expected surge in passenger traffic during the PET Examination 2026, scheduled for October 25, October 30 and November 1. The arrangements include special unreserved examination trains, possible extensions of existing train services, adjustments to train timings and the deployment of additional train rakes, depending on passenger demand.

The initiative aims to facilitate the smooth movement of candidates travelling to examination centres across different cities and railway stations, while also ensuring that they can return to their respective destinations after the examinations. With candidates expected to travel in large numbers during the examination period, the railway administration is focusing on managing additional passenger loads without disrupting regular train operations.

The operational plan has been prepared by the Prayagraj Division in coordination with other railway divisions, including Jhansi and Agra, as well as other concerned railway authorities.

PET Exam 2026: Examination Dates and Timings

The PET Examination 2026 will be conducted on three separate dates, with two shifts scheduled each day. The railway arrangements are designed to support candidates travelling before their examinations and returning home after completing the tests.

The railway administration anticipates increased passenger movement on routes connecting Prayagraj, Kanpur, Jhansi, Mathura, Lucknow, Varanasi and other important destinations. The arrangements are intended to provide additional travel options and improve the utilisation of available railway resources during the examination period.

Two Special Unreserved Examination Trains Announced

As part of the arrangements, the Prayagraj Division has planned two important one-way unreserved examination special trains. Both services are scheduled to operate on October 24, October 29 and October 31, allowing candidates to travel on the night before the examination dates.

1. Train No. 01821: Prayagraj Junction to Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi

Train No. 01821 will operate as a 12-coach unreserved examination special from Prayagraj Junction to Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi (VGLJ).

The train is scheduled to depart from Prayagraj Junction at 7:45 PM on October 24, October 29 and October 31, 2026. It will arrive at Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi at 5:15 AM the following morning.

The overnight service is intended to help candidates travelling towards Jhansi and other relevant destinations reach their destinations ahead of the examination. The unreserved arrangement is designed to provide additional carrying capacity for passengers who may find regular services crowded during the examination period.

2. Train No. 01823: Kanpur Central to Mathura Junction

Train No. 01823 will operate as a 12-coach unreserved examination special between Kanpur Central and Mathura Junction.

The train will depart from Kanpur Central at 8:00 PM on October 24, October 29 and October 31, 2026, and is scheduled to reach Mathura Junction at 3:10 AM the following day.

The service will benefit candidates travelling from Kanpur and stations along the route, including Phaphund, Etawah, Shikohabad, Firozabad and Tundla, subject to the applicable stopping arrangements.

Schedule of Special Examination Trains

Train No. Route Departure Arrival Scheduled dates
01821 Prayagraj Junction–Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi 7:45 PM 5:15 AM next day Oct 24, 29 and 31
01823 Kanpur Central–Mathura Junction 8:00 PM 3:10 AM next day Oct 24, 29 and 31

Both services are planned as 12-coach, one-way unreserved examination specials. Arrival times are on the following day.

Additional Special Trains Through Inter-Divisional Coordination

Apart from the two identified services, the railway administration has made provisions for additional special trains in coordination with the Prayagraj, Jhansi and Agra divisions of North Central Railway and other concerned railway divisions.

Additional services may be arranged, depending on passenger requirements, for destinations such as Kanpur Central, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Lucknow, Mathura, Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi and other relevant locations.

Coordination between the divisions is expected to help railway officials assess demand across different routes and deploy additional services where necessary. The arrangements also provide flexibility to respond to changing passenger volumes during the three examination dates.

The availability and operation of additional services will depend on operational requirements and the arrangements implemented by the concerned railway authorities.

Existing Trains May Be Extended or Their Timings Adjusted

The railway administration has also planned measures to increase the usefulness of existing train services during the examination period. Depending on passenger demand and operational feasibility, selected regular trains may have their destinations extended or their timings adjusted.

According to the operational plan, timing changes may be considered for three trains operating on the following sections:

  • Kanpur Central–Lucknow

  • Kanpur Central–Rae Bareli

  • Kanpur Central–Khajuraho

In addition, provisions have been made to extend the services of nine trains operating on routes that include Kanpur Central–Fatehpur, Etawah–Kanpur Central and Kanpur Central–Tundla, along with other relevant sections.

These measures are intended to improve connectivity and make better use of the existing railway network, particularly on routes expected to experience higher demand from examination candidates.

The proposed changes will be implemented as required, taking into account passenger traffic, train availability and other operational considerations.

Additional Rakes and Better Passenger Management

The deployment of additional train rakes is another component of the overall strategy. Rakes can be utilised to augment passenger-carrying capacity where demand exceeds the capacity of regular services, subject to operational availability.

The railway administration is seeking to balance the needs of examination candidates with the requirements of other passengers using the network during the same period. Special trains, extensions and timing adjustments are expected to provide additional options for travel and help distribute passenger traffic across available services.

For candidates travelling long distances, particularly those who need to reach their examination cities before the morning shift, overnight services could offer an important alternative to regular trains.

However, candidates should check the latest train schedules, stoppages and operational announcements before beginning their journeys, as some arrangements may be implemented according to actual requirements.

What PET Candidates Should Know Before Travelling

Candidates planning to use railway services during the PET Examination 2026 should keep the following points in mind:

  1. Plan travel in advance: The examination dates may see increased passenger traffic on major routes.

  2. Check special train details: Confirm departure times, arrival times and applicable stoppages before travelling.

  3. Allow sufficient time: Reach the examination city well before the reporting time specified on the admit card.

  4. Monitor railway announcements: Timings, extensions and additional services may change according to operational requirements.

  5. Plan the return journey: Candidates should also account for passenger demand after the examinations conclude.

Railway Preparations Aim to Ensure Smooth Travel

The Prayagraj Division’s preparations reflect the need for coordinated railway operations during large-scale examinations that involve substantial intercity travel. By introducing unreserved special trains, keeping options open for additional services, and planning extensions and timing adjustments to regular trains, North Central Railway aims to make the journey more convenient for PET candidates.

The effectiveness of these measures will depend on passenger demand, the availability of railway resources and the timely implementation of the proposed operational changes.

With the PET Examination 2026 scheduled across three dates and two daily shifts, candidates are advised to remain updated on official railway announcements and plan their journeys carefully to avoid last-minute difficulties.
