IMD Issues Safety Advisory for Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds
The IMD has cautioned that heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds could damage vulnerable structures, uproot small trees and affect plantation, horticulture and standing crops.
Other possible impacts include damage to kutcha houses, huts, walls and roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, localised flooding, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable hilly regions. Road and railway traffic may also be affected due to heavy rainfall and squally winds. Visibility could deteriorate, while helicopter services and marine activities may face disruptions.
The department has advised people to monitor weather updates and move to safer locations if conditions deteriorate. People have been advised not to take shelter under trees during thunderstorms and lightning. Electrical appliances should be unplugged when lightning is expected, and people should stay away from water bodies and objects that conduct electricity.
Tourism, recreational activities and onshore and offshore operations should be regulated in areas likely to experience adverse weather.
Agricultural and Livestock Advisories
The IMD has also issued agricultural advisories for rain-affected regions.
In Tamil Nadu, farmers have been advised to ensure proper drainage in rice, maize and casuarina fields. Excess water should be removed, while banana plantations should receive mechanical support. Sugarcane field drains should be opened to prevent waterlogging around plant roots.
In Kerala, farmers should maintain proper drainage in standing crop fields and undertake rabi rice transplantation only when field conditions are suitable. Banana and papaya plantations should be supported, while young plants and vegetables should be secured against gusty winds.
Farmers have also been advised to move harvested produce to safer locations or cover it with tarpaulin sheets to protect it from strong winds and rainfall.
Livestock owners should keep animals inside sheds during heavy rainfall and store feed and fodder in safe locations. Fish farmers should ensure proper drainage outlets with protective netting around ponds to prevent fish from escaping during overflow.
The IMD has advised residents, farmers, fishermen and local authorities to remain alert and follow district-specific weather warnings as rainfall activity intensifies across several parts of the country.
