Ashwini Vaishnaw Reviews Railway War Room at Rail Bhawan, Focus on AI-Based Monitoring and Festive Crowd Management

Indian Railways Deploys Over 18,000 Special Trains During Festive Season Against 12,000 Last Year; Around 700 AI-Enabled Cameras Strengthen Passenger Monitoring

Union Minister for Railways, Electronics and Information Technology, and Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the functioning and preparedness of the Railway War Room at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi amid the ongoing festive season. The review focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), live CCTV surveillance and real-time operational data to strengthen railway operations, improve passenger safety and ensure effective crowd management during the peak travel period.

During the review, the minister examined how the centralised War Room is being used to monitor railway stations, track train movements and coordinate operational responses. The facility integrates live visual feeds from railway stations with AI-based monitoring systems and operational information, enabling railway officials to maintain continuous oversight of important locations and respond promptly to emerging situations.

The War Room has been developed as a centralised monitoring and coordination facility where officials can simultaneously observe activities at multiple railway stations. Its surveillance network provides live CCTV feeds covering important areas, including platforms, foot-over bridges and station surroundings.

The system also allows officials to zoom in on individual CCTV camera feeds to examine specific locations more closely. This facility enables focused monitoring of areas experiencing heavy passenger movement and helps officials assess situations requiring immediate attention.

The integrated monitoring mechanism is particularly important during major festivals such as Diwali and Chhath Puja, when large numbers of passengers travel to their hometowns. Increased passenger movement at major railway terminals requires continuous coordination among station management, railway divisions, security personnel and operational teams.

Over 18,000 Special Trains to Manage Festive Rush

During the review, Vaishnaw highlighted the extensive arrangements made by Indian Railways to handle the increased passenger rush during the festive season. He stated that more than 18,000 additional special trains are being operated this year, compared with approximately 12,000 special trains during the corresponding festive period last year.

The increase in special train services is aimed at providing additional transportation capacity and reducing pressure on regular train services during peak travel periods.

The minister also highlighted the development of dedicated passenger holding areas at around 20 railway stations. These facilities are intended to accommodate passengers before boarding and help regulate their movement towards platforms.

Dedicated ticket counters and multiple passenger scanning facilities have also been introduced as part of the crowd management arrangements. These measures are designed to facilitate smoother passenger entry, improve queue management and prevent overcrowding at sensitive station locations.

Indian Railways has additionally deployed around 700 AI-enabled cameras to strengthen surveillance and monitoring arrangements. These cameras are intended to support officials in identifying passenger movement patterns and monitoring crowded areas more effectively.

Vaishnaw stated that preparations for the festive rush had started nearly six months in advance. Special attention was given to anticipated passenger demand during the Chhath festival, when a substantial number of people travel towards Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and other destinations.

AI-Based Monitoring for Faster Decision-Making

A major feature of the Railway War Room is the integration of AI-based systems with live CCTV feeds and real-time operational information.

AI-enabled tools facilitate prompt-driven analysis of activities and incidents at specific railway locations. This allows officials to examine situations, identify potential operational concerns and assess the need for timely intervention.

During periods of heavy passenger movement, such technology can help railway authorities maintain better situational awareness and coordinate responses to emerging crowd management requirements.

The system also supports monitoring of important station areas where passenger congestion can affect the smooth movement of travellers. By combining visual surveillance with operational information, railway officials can obtain a more comprehensive understanding of conditions at different locations.

The technology-driven approach is aimed at shifting railway monitoring towards proactive management, allowing officials to identify developing situations and initiate corrective action without waiting for conventional reporting mechanisms.

Real-Time Train Tracking and Delay Management

Apart from passenger surveillance and crowd management, the War Room also facilitates real-time monitoring of train operations.

The system enables officials to track train movements and monitor delays across the railway network. Operational teams can identify disruptions, examine their possible causes and take corrective measures to improve punctuality and ensure smoother train operations.

Real-time operational information is particularly useful during the festive season, when additional special trains increase the complexity of railway operations. Continuous monitoring helps officials coordinate train movements and respond to operational challenges.

The availability of centralised information also supports coordination between different railway units, enabling faster communication and decision-making.

Technology-Driven Railway Management

The review of the War Room reflects Indian Railways’ increasing emphasis on technology-driven administration and integrated operational monitoring.

The combination of AI-based surveillance, live CCTV feeds, digital information systems and real-time train tracking is intended to strengthen the railway network’s ability to manage large passenger volumes while maintaining operational efficiency.

With more than 18,000 special trains, dedicated holding areas at around 20 stations and approximately 700 AI-enabled cameras deployed for festive arrangements, Indian Railways is relying on a combination of infrastructure, manpower and technology to manage the seasonal passenger rush.

The centralised War Room is expected to play an important role in coordinating these arrangements by providing railway officials with real-time information and supporting faster responses to passenger-related and operational challenges.

The initiative underlines the growing role of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in railway management, particularly in improving passenger safety, crowd regulation and operational decision-making during periods of exceptionally high demand.
