Hyderabad-Pune Bullet Train Project Land Acquisition Begins in Telangana

Telangana Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao says DPR work and land acquisition proposals are progressing rapidly for the Hyderabad-Pune high-speed rail corridor, while surveys continue for Hyderabad-Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Chennai bullet train routes.

In an exclusive interaction with News Station Editor Siddharatha, K. Ramakrishna Rao shared key updates on the proposed high-speed bullet train corridors connecting Hyderabad with Pune, Bengaluru and Chennai. Rao said three major bullet train routes linked to Hyderabad were announced in the recent Union Budget, making Telangana a major hub in India’s future high-speed rail network.

According to Rao, the three proposed corridors include Hyderabad-Pune, Hyderabad-Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Chennai. He said that out of the seven high-speed rail corridors announced across the country, three either originate from or terminate in Hyderabad. Discussions are already underway between the Telangana Government, the Central Government and the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited regarding the execution of these projects.

Rao revealed that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Hyderabad-Pune bullet train corridor has already been prepared and proposals related to land acquisition are currently being processed. Meanwhile, survey and DPR work for the Hyderabad-Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Chennai corridors are progressing on the ground.

Highlighting the importance of the Hyderabad-Pune corridor, Rao said the project would strengthen historical, cultural and economic ties between Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka regions that were once connected during the Nizam era. He noted that the corridor would significantly improve mobility for education, employment and business activities while boosting economic development in interior districts along the route.

Speaking about the Hyderabad-Bengaluru corridor, Rao said the bullet train would drastically cut travel time between the two major technology hubs. He pointed out that while air travel currently takes around four hours including airport transit time, the proposed high-speed train could connect city centres in nearly two-and-a-half hours. The corridor is expected to benefit Telangana, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh by improving connectivity, investment opportunities and regional economic integration.

On the Hyderabad-Chennai bullet train project, Rao said the high-speed corridor would reduce travel time from nearly 12 hours at present to around three hours. He added that the route would provide major benefits to the IT sector, pharmaceutical industry, tourism and students travelling between Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Rao said the corridor would revive historical economic and social connections between Hyderabad and Chennai dating back to the pre-1953 era.

Responding to questions regarding delays faced by the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, Rao said both state and central governments have learnt valuable lessons regarding land acquisition, technology, financing and engineering execution. He expressed confidence that future projects could be completed in nearly half the time taken for India’s first bullet train corridor due to improved domestic manufacturing capabilities, growing engineering expertise and better financing experience.

Rao said India now has stronger technological capabilities and experienced infrastructure companies capable of handling high-speed rail construction efficiently. He added that governments at both the state and central levels are committed to ensuring faster execution of these ambitious projects.

The proposed bullet train corridors are expected to significantly transform connectivity, economic activity and regional development across southern and western India while strengthening India’s expanding high-speed rail infrastructure network.
