Depression Near Odisha Coast Expected to Bring Heavy Rainfall

A depression over Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal, located off the coast of Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh, has moved nearly west-northwestwards at a speed of 3 kmph over the past 6 hours. As of 0530 hours IST today, July 20, 2024, the depression centered near Chilika Lake on the Odisha coast at latitude 19.6°N and longitude 85.4°E, approximately 40 km south-southwest of Puri and 70 km East-Northeast of Gopalpur in Odisha.

According to meteorological experts, the depression is likely to continue its west-northwestward movement, traversing across Odisha and Chhattisgarh. It is expected to gradually weaken over the next 24 hours.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued warnings predicting light to moderate rainfall at many places, with occasional intense spells, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The affected regions include Vidarbha (Bhandara, Chandrapur, Nagpur & Wardha), Telangana, south Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Andhra Pradesh, North Tamilnadu, Assam & Meghalaya. Additionally, light to moderate rainfall is expected at a few places in Vidarbha (Gadchiroli, Gondia, Yavatmal, Amravati), Marathwada, Konkan, Kerala, Karnataka, remaining northeast India, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal within the next 3 hours.

Authorities have advised residents and authorities in these regions to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to mitigate any potential risks associated with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
